Just had a thought about the two threads and I really don't mean to stir. But we are a bit hard to define - it's not the daily thread and it's not pure economics and I think in the early days it was very hard for the BGs to pin down what was and wasn't Old style Money Savings, so we used to get a lot of warnings that it was degenerating into a discussion thread. Then MSE Andrea gave us the go ahead to chat in our own way because the thread was clearly fulfilling a need among large numbers of the people who lurk on the Old Style Board. But I think the number of times we had been pulled up before that has perhaps made people feel guilty when they catch themselves wandering down interesting by-ways and maybe they over react because they are worried about getting us warned again.
My interpretation is that Andrea has given us her blessing to chat as long as we play nice. Maybe what we could do is when we catch ourselves going off at a tangent and it seems to be taking longer than usual to come back on course, we could consciously have a break-out session rather than get each other ruffled about talking about things some of us would clearly like to talk about. I suspect those break out threads wouldn't last very long. But I would have been quite interested in having a discussion with Lionel Blair, for example while others have said quite clearly they don't enjoy that sort of thing.
Maybe if four or more people plus a BG say 'Take It Outside' that could be the cue for a breakout thread? It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -
Getting quotes from trades :eek::eek::eek:
How is it such a nightmare when we're in the middle of a recession??????
My Mum was looking for a decorator...2 failed to turn up for appointments...one obviously wasn't interested after seeing what she wanted as although he turned up he then never submitted a quote...another also obviously not interested as he submitted a redicuolously OTT quote...however she did find a great bloke (whose been back & done another job for her since) in the end but what a palaver!!!
We have a fault with one of our double glazed windows...still just within the warranty (oh but that is a whole other story which I shan't bore you with!)...told to get some quotes from local DG companies...obtaining hens teeth would be simpler...most DG companies simply not interested "just for one window" & refused to send anyone out to even look. One said that they would "quote site unseen"...ummm how does that work send a quote for £150 & then find the job would cost £350, really smart that is!
I despair I really do0 -
ah yes, those oh so attractive braces!
I have no idea where my fusions are but I have a scar from my neck to the top of my harris!
Hahahaaa...I had the flipping best surgeon. The other one in the hospital really did mess around. I ended up in Mansfield as Stoke Mandeville (the top one at the time) couldnt fit me in. I was a bit of a rush job. :rotfl:
9 days in and out. Best thing that ever happened to me. So tell your son that when he is um, over 40 and still walking tall, that all the pain will have been worth it. :grouphug: Fingers crossed for him.0 -
I'm having new vinyl in the kitchen! Well, once I get through to Carptrite coz they don't seem to answer the phone and I need to rectify a slight mistake OH made in the measurements
It may not be quite as exciting as new carpet, but I could jump for joy atm! :jThe old vinyl's been down for ten years and was nasty cheap stuff, which was all we could afford at the time.
Now we can afford nice-but-not-too-expensive stuff and I'm thrilled. Got it a good price in their sale.Normal people worry me.0 -
Minnie, if you do blanche your leeks, a quick and easy way to cool them is to fill the sink with cold water and a handful or two of ice cubes.
Dunk them in a large sieve or collander and bob's your aunty.
Also, if you are worried about storing things in an outbuilding, and have them against a wall, flatten any cardboard boxes you have and put them under your stores and gaffer tape them to the wall, the cardboard acts like insulation and stops things freezing.
thats a brilliant idea red doe i store quite a bit in my so called garage:rotfl: and that is one idea i will definately use :TMy big pig eats £2 coins 20p 5p 2p 1p plus any money kind people leave on the pavements and gets emptied on 15th september each year sept 2011 total was £261 which helps pay xmas

Wow, this is a busy thread - it looks like I'm going to have a lot of reading to do on days when I'm busy at work doing... well, work!
This might fit more neatly on the winter thread (if so, I apologise and will go and re-post there) but I've been thinking of getting an electric heater for my bedroom: it has three outside walls, one of which is mostly patio doors, and gets really cold in winter. I'd rather not turn the central heating up as it's likely to cost me a fortune in gas (and results in the rest of the flat being chronically over-heated), but I'm wondering if an electric heater would be any cheaper to run. I spotted a halogen heater in my local Wilkinsons today for £17 something - does anyone know if that's a good price?
Hobsons Choice - about a year ago I managed to persuade my landlord to install new vinyl flooring in my kitchen as the existing stuff was full of holes and hopelessly unhygienic. Within a month of having the new flooring laid, I had a water leak and the nice new vinyl's now all bubbled around the edges. I hope you have more luck with yours!
paidinchickens - I've never tried it myself as I adore mushrooms and never have any left over, but I understand you can freeze chopped mushrooms, although they go a bit mushy and are only really suitable for putting in stews and the like. If that doesn't appeal, why not make mushroom soup and freeze that? (Mmm, mushroom soup...)Back after a very long break!0 -

I lost my selfseeded coriander patch in the garden to the cold overnight. The beans are busy drying in the pods (couldn't eat or freeze anymore, so had to let them run to seed). Does anyone know if my beetroots will be OK out there in the ground along with the cabbages and leeks?

My DD (12) has mild scoliosis. Her back looks like the roadsign for the lane narrowing on the left:A boyfriend of mine spotted it as his first girlfriend had the rod wotsits put in her back at Stoke Mandeville and he was caring for her for months before and after at the age of 19.
DD is being conservatively treated at the moment, as it appears that it may be due to muscular thingumies, so they say. But she has pectus excavatum and a paternal family history of Marfan Syndrome, so I am staying quiet until there is her review in April. She's had 6 sessions of physio and that's it.
She begged for a bear hug last night as she hurt so much. So I did, and as I did, every single facet joint in her spine from S to T1 made a godawful noise. She used the accessible shower room last night as she couldn't manage to use the bath upstairs - which is a big concession from her, as she normally refuses to use it. (I have no such problems with it - I thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread to have a shower I could get in and out of)
Is feeling worse in the cold a common scoliosis thing?
She's been using a hot water bottle for about a fortnight, too.
I have been up in the loft and stickytaped a load of the insulating sheeting you get for under laminate over the hatch lid. That was - interesting -
Spent out a fortune on thick, floor length curtains for her,
ordered a memory foam mattress topper (warmth and support, I figured),
forced her to clean her room, thus making it possible for the heat to escape from the radiator into the room (it's by the door neat her bed, not by her window, covered by curtains)
and taken my beloved huge wool rug from the living room and put it on the (uninsulated) kitchen floor so it isn't as cold when she walks into it at stupid o'clock every morning for school.
and, despite my worries about the cost, I've popped on the central heating for the last hour, as that will bring the temperature up for when she comes in the door from school. Definitely impressed by new radiators/heating system though. I can feel the heat being pumped out almost instantly from a fair distance away. I don't have the heating on during the day normally, though.
Actually, looking around, she seems to have 'borrowed' one of my pairs of gloves. Bought her another woolly hat last week, which should be helping and I know she has her eye on my thick scarf I got from Primark a few weeks ago when they were new in. I've hidden a snood and a very thick hat in my room, as I still need some of the things for myself. I think her father and his OH have got her some thick, fluffy socks to wear in the evening, too.
I'm having trouble getting someone who wants to earn some money. I want to get a cleaner in for a top to toe spruce up of the house (I've not been well myself), but nobody is interested in even emailing me back. I've also contacted a couple of window cleaners and they can't be bothered, either. I would have thought someone might want to earn some money before Christmas, but apparently not.
Anyway, that's almost preparing for winter, and I'm sure someone might pop their head up to tell me I'm on the wrong thread again - or, as DD has scoliosis, the wrong boardI could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -

I chop them and fry them off then freeze. You need to squeeze them out when defrosted as they get quite watery. Great for soups/stews, but not much else.GC Mar 13 £47.36/£1500
