Another reason the LCCs are strict onhand luggage size is the very short turnaround times they have so they cant afford to have passengers hunting round for space in the overhead lockers.

US low cost airlines, the home of the carry-on, dont seem to have this problem.....they let you carry on almost anything. Its all about revenue generation, not space in the lockers.

Incidently the review of the first 787 flight.....apparently it has cavernous lockers!!!

The (very) simple answer is not to take a bag that is too big or too heavy as per their T&C. Why do people always want to push the rules and then moan if they get charged for it?
You are very clearly told several times what size cabin baggage you can take without charge, anything bigger you have to pay for.
If you take a big or heavy bag you are trying to get a part of their service for nothing that you should be paying for, a bit like getting on a BA flight to OZ and sitting in a first class seat with an economy ticket why oh why is this so bl**dy difficult to understand?

Budgetflyer, yes you are correct. Stick to their rules and you will be fine, and yes they are a big company , but Easyjet although having a smaller market share make larger profits, and you can take on any weight you can carry. Southwest, who are the worlds biggest airline, did away with their charge for 1 piece of stowed baggage and saw their market share and profits rise. So it does make you wonder if it is just nit picking to cover the slim profit margin from the flight ticket. Surely MO has researched this and is just being typical O'leary about it.
BTW I have flown with RA a couple of times now and would not take a bag that was 1cm over the limit
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

And thats one of the many reasons why I would only fly RA as a last resort......eg noone else flies there, flight times etc.

  • flew from Prestwick last week and they did weigh every case, didn't see them measuring any though. No bother at all flying home from Rome. No weighing, no measuring, people carrying more than one bag, no seperate queue for those who paid for priority boarding ... utter free-for-all

We bougt 2 of these off ebay, glad we did as everyone was made to put luggage in cage, just don't put bulky stuff in the front pocket of bag, fitted loads in them as they are very lightweight.

Thanks for that link. Couldn't believe how many cases available. Not chosen this one but have gone for another one!

Slightly OT, but flew to Germany on Easyjet this week. At the gate, the Gate rep was wandering up and down saying "Anyone who will put their hand luggage into the hold can do it for free, and receive speedy boarding for free". Methinks the current hold luggage business model is falling apart.

Nice to hear Ian but it really depends on the airport and staff. I have been at some airports - Valencia comes to mind where they made us put the case in a cage and people were being charged..
