Was that at the check in desk or once you were through?

Prestwick in Scotland weigh every single item of hand luggage .

Just back from Lanzarote with Ryanair from Prestwick, they did not make everyone weigh every single item of luggage.

    Lucky if they stopped 5%

Yes, they need to catch people out and enforce their rules to stay in business, they also have the cardboard box checker which your bag would not fit into, can you afford to risk losing £40 per sector?

No they don't need to catch people out to stay in business Richard. Why do you keep saying that ? They make their money from repeat, satisfied customers, now, 90 million+ of them, Europe wide, who appreciate a tightly run, efficient airline which often provides bargain fares for those flexible enough to follow the t&cs

They have a set of conditions that they insist on to get a flight for X amount. They also have a set of fees , clearly stated for anyone who doesn't want to stick to those quite reasonable conditions and may want to "tailor make" their flight for what ever reason.
    choices, choices

Clearly stating a MAXIMUM cabin bag size of 55cmx40cmx20cm is not trying to "catch people out" Its being upfront and honest.

If someone chooses to disregard the clear and precise information provided then that is up to them, but if your bag is 2cm bigger, then its bigger. end of

How strict airlines are with onboard luggage depends on the culture of the country you fly from. In the UK they are pretty lax with the rules and there is little control. But you will also need to fly back (maybe taking home some Continental treats or bargains) and they may be much stricter on enforcing rules from where you want to fly back from.

I've flown Ryanair from Several UK & Foreign airports, as a hand luggage only passenger

I always take a medium size holdall (not a trolley case) anyway most of the flights I have been on the check in staff (prior to boarding gate) quite often go along the queue checking people with a trolley case, by placing there standard sized ryanair cardbaord cover over any dodgy looking trolley cases

however I have never witnessed anyone with a sports holdall, no mater what size get these either checked or refused boarding

hope this isn't the kiss of death for future flights
  • I've flown with a lot of airlines, including Ryanair and Easyjet. In my personal experience, Ryanair are the most stringent with their limits and they are the only airline which has attempted to charge me excess baggage on a RETURN flight from Dublin, when I had dumped all toiletries and my bag weighed far less than on the outward flight from London!

Passengers don't read the http://www.ryanair.com/en/terms-and-conditions?view=print 15 pages and get caught out if their hand luggage is larger. Ryanair do need this extra revenue stream, and when the extra revenue streams aren't flowing so well, they change the rules to increase/maintain the flow of revenues.
The ryanair booking pages should be clearer and not simply just link to a 15 page document.

I've never had a bag weighed but it's been measured every single time by placing it in the metal cage thing they use.

I've seen many people charged the £40 if it's a tiny bit over.

I got my case from Sports Direct, the GOLA ones, they are only about £7.99 and they fit perfectly.
