You don't have IE9 as it won't run on XP, which you do have.
Get your son to backup your files to a DVD as you have the drive - I'm sure he'll be able to do that. ;)
He's hundreds of miles away at uni.....
someone has said i have IE8
so it's all down to me at the minute !!!!!

To the OP, please ignore posts telling you to wipe the hard disk and do a fresh install. From what you have told us your PC is more than adequate for the tasks at hand and just needs a few tweaks.
IE8 is the latest version that will work with Windows XP and will be fine.

What the others are trying to do is tell you how to backup your photos to DVD/CD. No matter what else you do this is a priority. Equally important is the Hijack this log as it can tell us what may be causing problems.

To others, it's obvious that the OP is a newbie, and sending conflicting messages about removing/installing drives etc is not going to help. Slow and steady is the name of the game here.

Getting back to the original problem, you could try installing a different browser like Firefox or Chrome and see if that works OK. Just google for them to get one. They will install without interfering with IE8.
Then leave the backup and cleaning it up until your son gets home - I hear he's got a plane ticket ;)
Malwarebytes didn't report any problems, but it's worth doing a full scan rather than the quick one. It may take an hour or two though.

You appear to have both McAfee and Avast installed? Avast good, McAfee bad.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
