That does sound remarkably like a group that's on full moderation, yes.Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. Board guides are not moderators and don't read every post. If you spot an inappropriate or illegal post then please report it to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com. It is not part of my role to deal with reportable posts. A quote from the Freecycle Mod Manual:
A Final Emphasis on Moderating Members:
*** DON'T FULLY MODERATE YOUR GROUP. Full moderation of all posts is not allowed. Moderation of new member posts is fine - just remember to take the folks off moderation after a week or two and/or after you are certain they are not spammers. Important: The moderation of troublemakers is highly advised.
Freecycle works best without full moderation. Empower your members to give directly to another member without moderator intervention, quickly, easily and enjoyably. Trust and empower your members directly as much as humanly possible and it'll pay out when your group gets really big.
Why? Because by then all members will know and use the rules correctly. You have taught them to fish rather than giving them fish for a day, right? This is why we don't allow FULL moderation. It's like "Freecycle Lite." It tastes kind of like The Freecycle Network™, but doesn't pack that caffeine punch, is slower, and more controlled. Be bold, trust, and educate members unless individuals give you a reason not to and moderate those individuals.
In choosing the New Member moderation remember that when removing the 'moderated' status from your members to check 'Use Group Settings'. This allows you to still resort to Full Moderation in case of an extreme situation. If you have checked 'unmoderated' then those member will still be able to post to the group even in the case of a required Full Moderation.Annual Grocery budget 2018 is £1500 pa £125 calendar month £28.84 pw for 3 adults0 -
Feel I must say I've been very pleased with my local freecycle group. I recently had a dodgy item to post ....kitchen knives ...and e-mailed my moderators for their advice and got a swift response, with advice on posting it in a safe way.
Yesterday I also had to modify one of my posts as it was for an adult item and I need to specify that it could be collected only by an adult. I did not object at all to it being moderated.....I had been so eager to post that I forgot to post in a 'safe and appropriate' way and the moderator fortunatly spotted it before it went on the list. I think the moderators do a grand job...after all it is voluntaryWe don't need to do it perfectly - good enough is exactly that GOOD ENOUGH.0 -
Hello,
Is there anyway to contact a freecycle mod?
I have received a rather strange email, as a reply to an post I listed months ago - I think I only received this email as you can tell I am female from my email address. Is there a way to let the mod know so that he/she can be made aware? (I would hate to think that this person is emailing only female to engage inconversation or whatever!!!)
Thanks!0 -
Just received this e-mail from my local freecycle
How i like how she just chooses the one she would like incase anybody happens to have it. I would like a PSP, PS3 and a new house but i aint going to advertise.
Hi,
As part of this years resolution to get fit and healthy, I advertised a week
or two back for a yoghurt maker and was very pleased to get one. Now my
daughter wants one-
Ideally a non electric one like the Lakeland Easiyo, but would be very
grateful for anything? Suppose it is too much to hope that someone else has
one lurking at the back of a cupboard?
Many thanks0 -
Re: contacting the moderators. If you go to the homepage of the Freecycle you're a member of then click the 'members' link on the left you should get tab saying 'moderators' and their details will be there.
I sent 3 messages to my local group this afternoon and nothing has re-appeared, in fact nothing has been posted for over a week now so I'm going to contact them to complain.0 -
my free cycle say you can only post once a month and then every day there is the same person on two or three times requesting stuff which is obviosly to set up a photography buisness!!!!
it is very autocratic.
i prefer to send my stuff to the ms society shop so at least someone is benefitting0 -
It realy is such a shame when some groups are not run well. Contact the GOA info@freecycle.org and tell them your problems-read Squeakys posts on this. Do not just give up on a fantastic organisation-work on trying to get the problem sorted. I don't know if your groups are large or small but this seems odd behaviour. The "regular posts" sound like they are from a member who is no longer on moderation. Make sure you are contacting the mod directly and not submitting a "post".Annual Grocery budget 2018 is £1500 pa £125 calendar month £28.84 pw for 3 adults0
