  • Freecycle does state in the guidlines that nobody should make unreasonable requests such as a for a plasma tv or whatever. As serendipty says, it isnt unreasonable to ask for a youghurt maker. No harm in being specific. After all, if it hadnt been stated that a non electric one was prefered, if someone happened to have one, they may think that the asker wanted an electric one or nothing. If you do not ask-you do not get. However, if lots of posts are approved for daft requests it would make a farce of the freecycle group concerned and people would start losing interest. It is therefore important to be reasonable but not judgemental. That is why moderation is a useful tool when a member first joins-to keep things within the guidelines. Many people are quite specific about what they are looking for within the group I run and I always approve such posts. However, if someone were obviously greedy or repeatedly requested very expensive items they would be moderated/ticked off so to speak. As for 5bed houses-rented ones are also not part of what Freecycle is about. Ive yet to see a rented 5bed house going to landfill and having to be saved-I don't know where this even came into Freecycle. If somebody were looking for a rental-of whatever type-as it requires an exchange of money(rent)it would not be approved.

5 bedroom house was'nt asked for. What was asked was if anybody know's anybody renting a 5 bedroom house as they were desperate and struggling.

Aparently received lots of responses and did get a 5 bedroom house to rent.
Rented houses are not allowed on Freecycle either.
Regarding the yoghurt maker-I was only teasing

    Hi everyone.
I am trying to find a bed for my daughter.
We would like to find a match for the one her sister has if possible,
or even two matching bed frames in wood as they want the same beds in
    one room.
It has a 'mesh' type slot in base and a wooden head and footboard in a
mahogany type colour it is on castors. This was rescued from a local
tip so I would be very very grateful if anyone else has one that is
    headed the same way.
I would love a matress for it/them as well if thats not stretching the
    request a bit too far.
    Sincere thanks to you all.
Previously requested on ********* but, sadly no response.

    I've been Money Tipped!
    Absolutely.

There's a chap on my local, regurlarly posts wanting computer related things. His latest was for a laptop (he's a poor student, you see) for uni. However, two seconds later, he posted a request for a free place to advertise his car. If he's that poor why is he running a car in the first place? When he sells the car why doesn't he use that money to buy the laptop?
  • Most Freecycle sites do not like "sob stories" it is better to just say: I am looking for a laptop please-or whatever. I would edit out the sob story and post the simple request.

Just seen this message Liz - unbelievable! I like the way he asks the Moderator for help selling his car.

I'm afraid that you're always going to get the odd one or two members who see Freecycle as a free ride, so to speak.

They tend to be self regulating since by the far the greater majority of members view posts such as these in exactly the way you (and I) do and so don't respond.

They either "get it" and come round - or they give up.

I just <sigh> and hit the "next post" button :)

  • I have just joined my local freecycle group

I cant find any details on how it works,

does the person wanting to take your stuff email you
do you give out your address - is there any checks or do you just have to trust

sorry if this is simple stuff but there was no Q&A on the site

    thanks again
