  • Someone on our Freecycle today has asked for 'fishy bits'

Free, surely, if you don't wash for a while?

I have been very lucky to have received some attachments for my Kenwood Chef recently after placing a wanted ad on freecycle.

Its the first time i had placed a wanted ad and i did feel a little uncomfortable asking but after having brought the bowl which did fit and attachments which didnt i couldnt really afford to pile anymore money into it. I have placed items for offer on there before although not that many and people have had them from me so that makes it a little fairer i think.

Also to make me feel better i took a the lady a nice Boots gift set for her which was from my collection that i buy throughout the year to have as gifts for birthdays/xmas etc. She said there was no need but i wanted her to have it as to me it was only fair as i was so chuffed to get these bits. I didnt know what i was getting to start with but when i met her she had for me a mincer, shredder and can opener.

I do find it ridiculous though the things people ask for. I thought there was a thing to say you were not allowed to ask for valuable items. Within the last week or so there has been a laptop wanted which i thought was a bit of a cheek. Worse than that though was the ad placed for wanting a ride on lawnmower but in the description it had 'slight cosmtic damage accepted', what a b****y cheek. If you want one then you should be grateful for whatever as long as it works. You shouldnt pick and choose.

With no explananation, my local Freecycle group has suddenly been changed by the moderator - both the group name and home page location. We can no longer access it through the Freecycle page, although the e-mails are still being received.

It is now a "Recyclestore" with the homepage stating items must be free or under £5. I am a bit concerned that allowing a charge to be made kind of goes against the whole ethos of why I joined. The moderator isn't responding to any queries made by group members as to why this has happened. Is this happening to any other groups, or just us?
  • That is weird, and I would be pretty upset about it!

My local Freecycle group is still going along the same as ever. Where is your group located? Do they have a cafe (discussion-only) group - for example, ours is EdinburghFreecycleCafe where you can do swaps and talk about Freecycle. If so, you might be able to find some answers there.

You could also try https://www.dontdumpthat.com, which is similar to Freecycle but is forums-based (no emails).

    Hi Lurleene

A new, proper Freecycle group seems to be going at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bournemouth-freecycle/

Not much happening there yet but I've joined up

I know it's really immature..but that made me laugh out loud despite having a very bad day today, ta for that! :rotfl:

I'm thinking of jacking in Freecycle altogether tbh, I'm fed up with getting daily digests of 'wanted' emails and the rudeness of some folk.

It's a shame, when I first joined, people seemed much less obsessed with the expensive stuff and it was more about shifting things that were old but someone else might use themselves, not sell on. We've had wood to make fences and suchlike the people were grateful to get rid and we were more than grateful for the wood! We've also given away all sorts of stuff, but people seem to have much more expensive tastes on there now and don't seem to want stuff anymore that we're giving away, even a sandwich toaster and car stereo was sniffed at (I had emails asking about brand, etc!). Plus we've had plenty of people not turn up or not reply at all when we've asked when they'll be coming to collect things.

I'm wondering if it's because it's been pushed by some folk as a place you get things for free, rather than a place you can give things away for free, too, which is a shame.

Thanks Spiddy, I've just (re!) joined the all new rebel Freecycle group! I hope the new guy who has registered this will be given the ok to continue. It was utterly bizarre the way the moderator hijacked all the Freecycle members. He replied eventually to all the people questioning why he did this and said that in his opinion Freecycle had become "bureaucratic and petty". In that case, surely it should have been his decision to leave, not take everyone with him!

eryn_kathleen - Thanks for your tip, I have found that there is a local Don'tdumo that and will be joining it.

On my group, they do ask that you should give something before requesting anything.

Mine too - but I don't have anything that someone would want to bother coming to collect  .

I love freecycle and get rid of loads of stuff on it, but today I really began to think about some posters. Someone is asking for a buggie for their grandson as parents are going on a foreign hoiday and just want a free one to take with them on the holi [and presumably dump it abroad]. Well, if they can afford a forein holiday they can buy a cheap buggy IMO.

A lot of groups have left the freecycle network over the last year or so because of issues with the original group owner being too controlling and bureaucratic. If you do a Google search you will find a longer explanation. I only know because something similar happened to my local group and a lot of people were cross that the mod 'took' everyone to the new group without asking. Eventually the mod apologised and suggested that people could belong to both or either if they chose to re-register.... It's all settled down now but as a result the real Freecycle group in our nearest city (which didn't leave the network) has become the main posting ground for the area.

I kind of don't care too much about the politics so I belong to both! All of ours have a strictly no-charge, no-profit policy though, so in real terms they are both fine by me :)
