Dont you dare feel guilty for staying at home and doing what is a really important job. You are a part of society as much as any high flyer with ££££ at the end of the month.

Well said Lady E. I also used to feel bad about being a SAHM until I met another SAHM who told me that she was a professional mum, multi tasking for her family of four. She was very proud of her achievements as a SAHM and she would tell anyone that cared to listen how she was running her home successfully.

So let's get this straight. You look after 2 children, support your unwell husband, generate income from ebay and surveys AND act as treasurer to 2 charities. When exactly do these people think you would fit a job in. You already do more work than probably all those 'employed' people.

Stick to your guns, I think it's great that you chose to be a stay at home mum - that in itself is a full time job - even when kids are at school. Taking on everything else as well proves just how hard working you are.

Either tell people to mind their own business, or tell them the truth, you already have several jobs - just because they are not conventional paid employment does mean they are not worthwhile. Being treasurer for 2 charities is a very responsible position and all credit to you for giving something back to the community. If only everyone in life did that, the world would be a much better place.

Now, try and find time to relax and have some you time in and amongst all that.

Why do people have such a problem with this. It's amazing. My son started nursery for 2hrs 25mins in sept and everyone keeps asking why i haven't gone back to work. Some of them look at me like I'm mad when I say I'm hoping not to. Like the op I do ebaying, comps, mystery shopping etc to bring in a bit of cash but would rather do without and know that whatever happens I'll be there for them first.
Well done for doing what's right for your family.

I laugh at people and ask them to let me know when they find a job which has 11 weeks holidays during school hols, plus another couple of weeks at short and no notice to cover 3 kids illness and events which a parent is invited to watch, which starts after 9.30, and I can leave at 2.30:)

Just airily respond that you couldn't possibly go back to work as it would be far too expensive to employ someone to do everything you currently spend working hours doing!

If you can afford to stay home, and you can cope without the mental stimulation and social contact of work then there is absolutely no reason to feel bad.

Lets face it no-one dies thinking "I wish I'd spent a few more hours at the office!" but how many regret the limited hours spent with their kids?

  • Enjoy the time with your children! We spent six years trying to have children and when i unexpectedly got pregnant when i was 36, it was amazing. I was on a contract workwise and had to continue until i was 40 or lose lots of money. Second child arrived when i was 38! "retired" from my career at 40 and since then have had the life of riley with both my children and it is by far the best job ever. Our finances have had to take a serious re-adjustment as i was on nearly 30k a year but even thats more than worth it. Take no notice of them, i was extremely jealous of people who could finish work as soon as they had children but could see the light at the end of my tunnel. Now i am in the light and feel sorry for those who have to still work to make ends meet. Either way, us women provide an extremely important service in society, enjoy it however you can and in whatever circumstances you are in.
