Mrs. Gambler has decided not to go back to her £30K job after maternity leave and be a stay at home mum and I'm all for it as I know she has a stressful job and now she will be a lot happier.
Okay so we'll have a major drop in income but half of it was going towards childcare fees anyway.
Well done you I say and I have to agree with most people on here in saying that other people are only jealous.
there's far too much of 'keeping up with the Jones's' going on in society today. Some people are more concerned with the size of their house, car and TV etc.0 -

Dont you dare feel guilty for staying at home and doing what is a really important job. You are a part of society as much as any high flyer with ££££ at the end of the month.
Good luck to you and your family and ignore any little comments that come your way , people are just jealous .
COMPLETELY agree with this. I SO wish I could be a SAHM but I am having to go back to work when my as yet unborn baby is only 6 months old...I feel about as guilty as it gets about going back to work and NOT being at home with my precious child.

I have a friend who when asked what she does simply replies "I am a professional mum" which sounds great - may be to do with the panache she says it with though.
I tend to say, "I'm a lawyer by training but either I'm not working at the moment or I'm just doing some voluntary work at the moment (depending on the situation), while I look after the children" This tends to stop people assuming that just because I'm a SAHM that I spend my life reading trashy mags and can only talk about the price of children's shoes, whilst also sending the message that there is a good reason why I'm not working at the moment, and its not just that I am unemployable or can't be bothered to find a job.
I think the key is not to be apologetic about it, and to try and find some formula which lets the conversation continue, as those who don't do the SAHM route find it difficult to know what to say when they meet one (a bit like the time I was seated next to someone didn't know at a dinner party who said he was a Quantity Surveyor. I have to this day no idea what this job entails, and couldn't think of a single thing to say to him!) Maybe talking about your charities might fit the bill.0 -
Hi
I havent read all the replies(sorry I am rushing out!!) but I just wanted to say that I am now 42 and my kids are 23 and 21. I was a SAHM for all of the time they both lived at home and I was asked nearly every week for years and years when I was going to get a job!!! I found it extremely rude of people to ask and I just put it down to jealousy. I used to get ask if I was bored, what did I do with myself all day etc etc. I LOVED being a SAHM and you dont have to justify yourself to anyone.
Both my kids loved me being at home----just do what is right for you and ignore other people!!
Take care

.Why do people have such a problem with this. It's amazing. My son started nursery for 2hrs 25mins in sept and everyone keeps asking why i haven't gone back to work
Thats because they don't see the value in motherhood and think that school is in fact free childcare to enable people to climb the employment ladder!!
I am very fortunate in that I have the best of both worlds - I work, but as a minister I do not have any contract of employment as such, and so there are no 'demands' (employment wise) on my time. This means that if the kids are sick - I am there, I do the school run every day (am & pm) - they come to 'work' with me if they are not at school - of course the flexibility is both ways (being called out when needed etc), but the added bonus of my vocation is that it is family friendly.0 -
i'm a sahm too! its great i love it i have a 3 &5 yr old and am not in any rush to go back to normal job which i find very boring even if i get money there!!!! when people ask i do find myself justifying what ive done all day but i must say i enjoy my own company and organising myself and family!!!!we are very good time planners, constantly multitasking and thinking of everybody else before ourselves,we can never phone in sick and can chose to work inside or out for a change of scenery! enjoy and isnt it lovely feeling when you get back to the quiet house at 9.05am to make a lovely cup of well deserved tea and toast!0

I love this thread. My youngest will be 6 this year and has been at school for 18 months now (where has the time gone). I know I'm looked down on because I haven't gone back to work (I did return to work after both my other two children) this time I am staying at home and work harder here than I would if I was employed.
We worked out that we couldn't afford for me to go back to work as even if I found a job for 25 hours a week between 9.30 and 2.30 we would be £300 per year better off. I am not working for £300 a year!Organised people are just too lazy to look for things

Infuriating, isn't it? I was a SAHM for twenty years until my youngest started at secondary school, and only went part-time then. I used to say I was a Manager (in Household Management if they asked further:D ). I actually think your children need you there more as they get older, not less, as the opportunities for communication seem to dwindle as their school/social lives expand, and sometimes those missed chances don't happen again.[0

This post gave me an idea - if being a minister / nun / nurse / etc is a vocation why isn't being a SAHM/SAHD...??You should never call somebody else a nerd or geek because everybody (even YOU !!!) is an"anorak" about something whether it's trains, computers, football, shoes or celebs
