Secondhand stove?

I am considering my stove options. I am favouring a secondhand Clearview over a new Stovax, my DH is the other way round. Which of us is right!?

What models are you considering/prices - but in general, Id definitely go for the secondhand Clearview! My OH installs woodburners and ours is a Clearview 400 Pioneer, which he bought second hand

I agree with hethmar.
A good condition secondhand Clearview is a better buy IMHO. Just ensure you get the correct size of stove for your room whichever you decide on.If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you! :dance:0 -
Just a question, what should one be looking for when buying any make of stove second hand, please?

Each stove will have its own weakneses, however I would be looking at the grate and riddling mechanism (multifuel stoves) to ensure it functions and it is not distorted as it is a pricey part on some stoves and hard to source on some "budget" models. If it has been overfired it can have distortion to the body and stove doors which may not seal well even when rope seals are replaced. Check hinges too! Cast iron stoves can crack over time due to constant heating and cooling. Interior corrosion due to burning wet fuels or mixing wood and solid fuel (best seen when firebricks removed.Just a question, what should one be looking for when buying any make of stove second hand, please?

Check baffle plates, firebricks and glass and factor into the cost if they are likely to need replacement. This is not an exhaustive list but just what spring to mind. Sure there are more to come!If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you! :dance:0 -
Humm, the Clearview we were watching on ebay is over £800 for the Pioneer 400 where as the Stovax (Huntington?) is around £650 new. I am going to find it hard to convince him at those sort of price differences. I really want a Clearview but unless I can find one somewhere a bit cheaper I will have to have the Stovax.0

Its true I am afraid. They are very sought after,so much so thay I have seen the pioneer sell for more on evilbay than the new price I paid for mine. Its all down to luck and someone selling in your area who will not ship via carrier which may deter some buyers.
The Stovax is not too bad a stove, it`s just the clearviews are superior IMHO. I am sure you have looked at the reviews by owners of both types stoves. If not try: http://www.whatstove.co.uk/If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you! :dance:0 -
The problem is that Clearview doesnt allow its stockists to discount
On most other stoves you can haggle 20 or 30% off the RRP, but not with Clearviews.
The one we have was actually one OH had fitted just 2 years previously (along with some others) in a commercial business that went under and it was offered to us.0 -
Well I am not that keen on a company keeping it's prices high that way TBH. I will have to hope that one comes up which for some reason no one else notices! Lol. I also think it will depend on fitting costs. The salesroom we went to for the Stovax said they wouldn't charge more than £600 for the labour. I haven't been able to get anyone to come out and give me a quote yet to see how comparable that is. That Clearview went for £900 + in the end
Scratch that! Checking in my despondancy I found one just listed with a buy it now of £550, nowhere near me but I don't care!!! Only hope it's ok. Am I allowed to post it here to see what you think?0 -
Go ahead, would like to see (and I won't be buying!)0

I have bought it now so I can't post for security. Fingers crossed it is ok. It is a funny colour (golden fire brown on the listing). Looks like a little rust over the top of the door. Probably I have bought a right old banger :rotfl:0
