cyclonebri1, that's exactly what I was annoyed by - there is no way they should have been able to park where they had- and yes - my handbrake was on (this is true because I hadn't moved my car for a couple of days by this point, and it took some gentle effort to disengage it).

move along now people - nothing more to see

Hmmm, there's still something not right here.

I could park a car in that 3" clearance space.

Anyone reading this just has to spread a couple of fingers to realise the gap we are talking about:eek:

Have you annoyed the neighbours or something similar??

Point is, 2 trolley jacks, (I and many others have them), can be used to shunt the car sideways into the gap.

Seriousley, someone is taking the pi*s here. :A

I have very proudly managed to parallel park into spaces where I only have a couple of inches at either end of my car. It takes a long time, a lot of physical effort on the steering wheel and a lot of slow, careful judging of just how far back and forward you can shuffle. I usually drive very small cars and make the most of available space (my last couple of houses have been on-street parallel parking zones that are squeezed for space).

Generally I find that the vehicle in front / behind me has at least a foot of space on their other end and therefore isn't stuck (they have more room than me). And I've certainly never parked in somebody's bumper, or crushed / damaged it.

what happened to the 'please be nice to all moneysavers'

I hate it when I post something innocently and then get critical emails from others!

The parking thing would have annoyed me too! I'd have put a note on their car!

Clearly it wasnt a "non space" as they parked in it, had you parked sensibly,i.e. leaving a two foot gap then ths would not have arisen.
Are you by any chance the sort of person who needs two parking spaces for one car?

The irony of some bint moaning about someone else's parking.

No you haven't, unless hubby has convinced you he has a 2 foot long penis, and you are going by that..

I think you guys are getting feet and inches mixed up, seriously, oops.gif and quite possibly feet with yards. To be honest I've never heard such tosh before.

    Repeat;

Can anyone park in a "3" gap by normal means????", no of course they can't. (In scale thats the gap between 2 typed words)

    It's a !!!!!!!! thread to be honest

  • I would be livid if I found a car parked against mine. I wouldn't have bothered with a note though. Even if there was damage I doubt anything could be claimed, one persons word against another and they may claim you parked against them! The good news minor touches never usually result in anything more than a minor flesh wound if the bumpers do their job.

I can promise you I have  It helps to have a wheel in each corner:

And, as I said in the previous post, plenty of time for shuffling.

It's basic geometry, it is an impossibility to park in a space 3 - 6 inches longer than your car. I don't know what the minimum gap would have to be (not difficult to work it out) but it certainly is not a few inches....... If you don't believe me get a few credit cards out on the desk infront of you and try it....

    Let's take a credit card, dimensions 86mm x 54mm
    Ratio 1.6:1
This is not the right ratio for most cars,

    My Corsa is 3.84m x 1.6m
    Ratio 2.4:1

    How about a Smart fortwo?
    2.7m x 1.56m
    Ratio 1.69:1

So the credit card card suggestion was a bad one. It's going to be easier to park a credit card than a smart fortwo!

So we would have to trim our credit cards to be 36mm wide to have a representation of a vauxhall corsa.
After doing that 1mm on a trimmed credit card = 46mm in real life 3 inches in real life would therefore be 1.7 credit card mm, 4 inches would be 2.2mm 5 inches 2.8mm 6 inches 3.33mm

I have calculated for a vaux corsa the minimum distance might be possible with a lot of work at 94 credit card mm which is 8mm longer than the credit card, which is 365 real life mm which is 14.3 inches

i.e. for a vaux corsa if the gap is say 15 inches longer than your car you **might** be able to do it, but it would be hard work.

And I made a model for a Hijet, and I think the same 15 inches longer would be the case.

reply to the thread in general,
It's a pity OP did not take a photo. It would have been entertaining.

If there's really no damage not worth getting upset about, but if the bumper was in that's definately scratched.

Someone mentioned that the car behind the car behind might have pushed this other car into hers. If the distances are as described that really is the ONLY possibility.

For those of you who are proud of being able to park an inch or a few from another car, be aware that this is willful obstruction. Except for LUM who parks close to a car on the end of a bay, that car has (or should have) a clear exit, but caution, if a disabled driver then parked on the yellow line on the other side of said car they could be blocked in, and explaining to a copper that the disabled driver came later, may not be easy.
