I'm not much of a socialist and it doesnt give me much comfort to be going out to work on a Winters day, having to turn my heating off/down to save money whilst others are warming their collective backsides at cheaper rates.
Ditto, I work full time, and have recently switched to using paraffin heating to top up during the colder evenings because I simply cannot afford to run Electric heating all winter. You dont feel the cold any less if you work! and plenty of working single people struggle with energy costs, as do low earning couples and they are entitled to sod all

I dont have any issue with those genuinely on or below the poverty line getting whatever they are entitled to, but Its a shame that the same 'muscle' that is levied towards forcing energy companies to introduce these discounts for certain qualifying individuals, can't be used in the same manner in order to lower and control the annual increases in energy prices across the board for EVERYBODY

It seems like whilst we shiver at the cost of increasing energy prices, other countries not so far across the water have quashed all gas price rises, and put a low ceiling on the increase of the cost of Elecricity this year after their Government stepped in in response to "rising public discontent"

I couldn't agree more Chris1973. I came off Severe Disablement Allowance because I went out and found a job but it seems that it has been the worst move I have made. I am proud that I got a job instead of staying at home but even though I now get Disabled Persons Tax Credit or whatever it is called now, it doesn't mean much when it comes down to getting help with my heating, council tax etc because I am not eligible for any help even though my illness means that I feel the cold more than usual! In addition to that, all my gas fires have been condemned and I can't afford new ones! I'll have to start burning the furniture soon!!

Hi - new to the thread and very, very confused!!! There was an article on BBC Breakfast on Saturday morning with the Money Box presenter saying that if you are in receipt of JSA and have children under 5 living with you, you would be entitled to the £120 grant.

Rang eon this morning (our provider) who said that this scheme was only open to pensioners....

Anyone please clarify this for me and let me know how to apply? Thank you in advance!

No, you need to satisfy one criteria from each list on the EDF link given above. Refer EDF to their own info.
I doubt many pensionbers would have children under 5 living with them...

  • I rang E on this morning asking how to apply for the discount as i am now in reciept of income support, child tax credits and have a baby of 11 months. I was informed this only applied to people in reciept of pension credits and that they would put my infomation on my record. They have other schemes for people in my situation and will unfrom me of anything i can apply for!
So is the news wromg or am i being fobbed off like other people?

They were speaking about this on BBC News again this morning and the government rep was trying to embarass the other suppliers into following British Gas lead of not capping the number of customers. Sounds great accept if you are one of those not eligible which means you'll be paying it for others on your bills. Looks like another back door tax.

Within the broad guidelines, it seems that the participating companies can draw their own parameters regarding eligibility. Absurd.
