Hi Debs
You might get an 'expert' answer for this type of question if you post your question on the Amazon Discussion Board. Although they might be a bit 'snappy' on the 'noob' type questions, they do love a challenge like this.
I think it's Stan who is the 'bible type' book expert.

Hi Debs
There are a few copies about with an approximate age of 1900 - 1910 and a listed price of £ 10 - £ 15 which usually means if those are the top prices then its not easy to sell. I would suggest you list it on ebay but Im not even sure the American religious collectors would buy it unless the covers were really pretty? Books of sermons are notoriously difficult to dispose of.
Hope this helps.0 -
wilf55 wrote:no number lines or anything
Number lines only began to show up in books about 20 years ago. Ive tried to establish precisely what year the first ones appeared but without success. Also, even when it started it wasnt universal with many publishers not adopting the system until much later. In fact some publishers still dont use number lines today.
As regards First Editions, many people get the wrong idea that all First Editions are collectable and valuable but in fact probably less than 1 in 5000 is of any interest. In general, a First Edition of any non fiction book does not add any value. There are exceptions, but these are few and far between. Probably the most popular has to be any non-fiction book which has nice illustrations by collectable artists.
First Edition fiction is a minefield but there are probably fewer than 200 authors who's works are of any great value simply because the books are First Editions.0 -
FFM,
Thanks for the link on maps - interesting as our charity shop has a huge box of them but I've never considered them before. Probably all rubbish..
The maps I was referring to were specially issued simpified ones to go with the series of books showing the whereabouts of the various places discussed - i.e. roman, georgian etc. so not much use without the books but a good addition to the series of books themselves. Each map covers 4 books in the series of 8. Was a TV spinoff, but interesting even so! With a bit of luck might get a tenner for them.0 -
Thanks , but still no clearer on whether mine is a true first. There is no number line but it says inside 1st N.E.L. printing. Every other copy Ive found has been listed as a first (its very rare) so maybe there was only one printing ???

By what I can see there was only the one printing of this paperback? Clearly quite scarce but whether any collectors would be willing to pay the high prices quoted is another matter. All you can do is store it and see. Have you checked ebay prices?0 -
Panic panic, I've lost a book...
I am actually sweating here! My lists show where the book should be, and it isn't there, completely gone and not previously sold either. I'm in a real panic now as I can remember the book and I can remember looking at it for some reason a long while ago, so I must have put it down somewhere wrongly and it's gone. I'm in a horrid panic, the only way out I suppose is to check all my boxes and 900+ books to see if I have accidentally packed it away wrongly. Trouble is I'm off to work shortly and checking all my storage will take well over an hour :eek:I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I was in this position last night. Sold a book on gardening which I just could not recognise from the title. It was an old book something like Gardening for £2 a week, but it came through on SDN as Gardening#2 and I was convinced I never had the book.
Luckily my son came to the rescue as I was just going over and over my book shelves unti he finally found it a very slim paperback (like Readers digest size)
- it was also one of those books that you think no-one will ever buy!
Nice and slim for postage too
Hope you find it Soolin.Grocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01
