I can't really help you here because I've never used Amazon auctions - from the Amazon Discussion Board I get the impression they are a bit of a 'non-starter'.
If I was going to auction something I would definitely use Ebay over Amazon.

Ive got a whole ton of 1st editions and they are all listed as 'collectable-'

Amazon auctions? never used them and aren't aware of any success with them from others, though auctioning mobiles and the like will attract the scammers who will try to pay you well over the value of the phone. The auction side of amazon is even less supported that the zshops!
As for First Editions! I don't really want to be the one who opens that Pandora's Box! The majority of modern fiction first edition, first impressions are worth no more than the later reprints. Unless the author is particularly collectible or that there were mistakes in the first printing and the majority were scrapped, they still only hold value to the collector and from what I have been told the market here has shrunk considerably.
It is important if you are describing an item as a first edition to describe the reasons for you identifying it as such. This can mean a certain amount of research may be needed as it may be the first edition in that binding, or by that publisher but earlier editions exist. Also it is common for people to quote a book as a first edition when it is in fact the 7th impression of the first edition. I believe the advice pointing to links on identifying first editions is in the first 2 posts on this thread.
The funniest time I have ever come across a book advertised as a first edition was a readers digest condensed novel!
On the positive side of this, many customers would not know a first edition if it jumped up and bit them, but you should be aware that a serious collector will be most upset to find out they had been mis-sold a book wrongly described as a true 1st/1stDo You Twitter?

been given an old book a religious book called
Wanted - A Boy and other addresses to the young by george c leader
minister of lightfoot grove baptist church stockton on tees
published by h r allenson ltd
7 racquet court fleet street however
i cant find a date in it references to sunlight soap adverts at railway stations abraham lincoln political figure gladstone lord shaftesbury
does anyone know how i should date it or how i can sell it searched on amazon bookfinders google etc and cant come up with anything
its interesting cos its got hand written sermon type notes with it and catalogue pages from h r allensons but cant find any references to anything when looking
obviously a book of great interest to some one but who???!!!
if it was worthless as such would prefer to send it to the church or something....can find the address of the church but cant find when george c leader was the minister there which would give me an approximated date on the book

that's a book for ebay rather than amazon imho, you could contact the church and ask when he was leader. Maybe try and get the keywords baptist, stockton, in the title may help, but I really don't have too much knowledge of old uncommon books like that.
As for working out what impression a book is, most modern printers use something called a 'number line' and this will often be described as a 'full number line' when describing a true 1st/1st
Number lines can look like this
1 3 5 7 9 10 8 6 4 2
or even more simply
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10
after the first impression the lower number is removed, and the same with subsequent impressions until you get something like this for the 8th impression
9 10 8
The choice often differs from publisher to publisher and some will give a date of first impression and then a list of dates of subsequent reprints of that edition.
As for identifying true firsts of books without number lines you need to refer to specialist knowledge as it could be as subtle as a slightly different shade of end paper or very slight variations in printing on spine.
I certainly do not want to identify myself as a specialist in identifying firsts, the only books I have learnt to identify are the humble ladybirds. Other than that I rely on number lines or seeking specialist knowledge. Often searching ABE will reveal first editions for sale which have all the notable markings listed by the seller so that may be a place to start for older books.Do You Twitter?
