I wouldn't recommend a 24 month contract at the moment given than in about 6 months time at most it's likely that there will be quad-cores about. Having said that, the Galaxy S2 is a great phone (I've had one since they came out). Frankly if I were in the market for a powerful phone now I'd probably decide to sit tight for a bit instead and see what happens early next year...

Why on earth do you need that much power to make a call. Don't get hung up on the paper specs. It's spec wars all over again.

If the device only needs one core to do run a process thats all it needs, very, very, very few phone based applications need significant processing power, and very few programs will be multicore aware so unless re-written to support multiple cores they'll only run in one core anyway.

A upward requirement for faster processors by software makers usually indicate sloppy code rather than a need for processor power.

Looks exactly the same. Has a faster processor. An 8mp camera instead of a 5mp camera and a bit more ram. Woo. A year to come up with that is laughable.
    Doesn't even have more RAM

Who said I use my mobile to make calls :rotfl: more seriously though, there's no need for quad-core, but it's what's coming next (and probably quite soon too) so people might want to bear this in mind before getting locked in a 2 year contract whether that is with the iPhone 4S or another headset, that's all :)

Jesus, I thought they'd upped the ram from 512 to 1gig.

Wow, an even bigger fail than I thought.

Actually it looks like the RAM is upgraded to 1GB. Tech Radar has a handy little page which might help people decide whether they want to upgrade or not: http://www.techradar.com/news/computing/apple/iphone-4s-vs-iphone-4-vs-3gs-1031767

But that is no differnet to getting locked in to a contract with any phone, be it apple, htc, motorola etc.

The Atrix dual core was the next big thing 6 months ago because it was dual core, and in the current non Apple (and only because Apple only release one model a year, albeit with 2 or 3 memory options) market anything is top dog for a month or two at the most before being superceded by a new latest best thing phone.

This year HTC have released (or announced for release) 17 phone models so far as far as I can see, Sony Ericson have released 10 models. Of course some are high end, some low but the point is no matter what you buy in the mobile world it will be superceeded very very quickly if it's not an apple (as I said only due to the once release a year from Apple).

Theres no point waiting for the next best thing, if you do you'll wait forever.

Correct on both counts, which is why I normally tend to save up and buy my phones sim-free if something really catches my eye though it doesn't mean I get a new one twice a year either :p

edit: this is now totally off-topic, sorry. I'll just keep my opinions to myself ;)

Has anyone considered that maybe they've given up with the iphone and are concerntrating on the bigger-buck that is the Ipad or even the Mac (or whatever else they decide).

Its clear to me they did this with the ipod classic and then the nano which doesn't really seem to get any bigger or better (or not so noticably) just a few design bits.
Its like they get an idea, take it as far as they want then it sort of fades out, in the mean time they release something completely different (in this example when fading out the classic and nano, the release of the ipod touch) and take this as far as they want.....see the pattern or is it just me?

Am wondering how much of an effect there will be without Steve Jobs now, it sounded like he had a pretty major role and wondering if there actually is anyone who can take his shoes?

Agree with waiting for next year- I've been putting off a new mobile since Feb this year and have saved a fortune! (Also don't have to worry about mobile theft, irritating people trying to get hold of me, battery issues or wrong bills...) Its actually quite addictive waiting for the next-big-thing and knowing your looking at it as a maybe rather then threat to how rubbish your 'new' handset now feels! (Yes, before anyone yells at me, I do not its not always a choice, some people need them for life and death etc etc).

Iphone 5 and even iPhone 6 will have Steve Jobs as thir godfather, You can bet that as soon as Iphone 4s was finalised and sent to manufacture the teams would be starting work on the next one or two and that would have had it's starting principles by Jobs.

It will take a while for Tim Cook's influence to be fully seen on a product as it takes a few years to go from the drawing board to production.
