Apparently Apple share price has fallen by over 4% since the announcement, I guess investors weren't overwhelmed by the updated iPhone either :p

It seems to have gone back up again. The share price fell on the announcement of the 4 and we know how that turned out ;)

The decision to keep the 3GS on sale seems particularly stupid. It's holding back the pace of app development as developers feel the need to cater to the lowest common denominator and therefore don't use all the capabilities of the newer models. One thing Apple has always been fairly keen on is ruthlessly abandoning backwards compatibility for the sake of progress - I don't know why they are keeping this ancient underpowered phone on sale when it can only help to fragment their own market

I'd say the main reason is to hit new price points that the iPhone has never yet hit. The 3GS has just shed £100 from it's price tag in the UK and has also hit the magical 'free on contract' in the US (which is a fairly rare sight) so it's basically expanding the iPhone market into as yet uncharted territory.

I am personally not that interested in Apple products, but I am very impressed by their marketing ability.

The media are falling over themselves to report anything and everything that comes out of Apple. This isn't even a new product. It's just an update.

Even this website is under their spell. How many other phone launches are regularly reported on MSE? There was even an article the other day rounding up the latest iPhone 5 rumours!

After having a bit of a browse (and a chuckle) through some iPhone/Apple forums it looks that Siri (the voice command app) has already been pulled from the store as the feature will be exclusive to the 4S. From the reactions to the announcement that I've read it looks like many people, including self-confessed die-hard Apple fanboys will either not upgrade to the 4S or change OS. Another thing that hasn't gone down too well in the US is the lack of 4G connectivity while other manufacturers have models out (or coming out shortly) which support it.

However I have no doubt that they'll still sell them by the truckload but quite probably not as many as they'd like...

I'm now all Appled-out so back to reading on my Kindle :p

i feel sorry for him, as time after time his internet data finishes before the end of the month and he has to rely on wi fi if he can find it;)
45 quid a month plus some money upfront to have a phone, that doesnt even have unlimited internet ;)

Yep, Apple are spinning the Siri as requiring the improved performance of the 4S in order to function - despite the fact that the original Siri app worked just fine on the iPhone 4 (the app has now been yanked from the App Store, so that it can become a 4S-exclusive feature).

This is probably the best 'news' article on the iPhone 4S release:
    Apple: New iPhone Good

CUPERTINO, CA—During a highly anticipated media event held today at the Apple corporation’s world headquarters, CEO Tim Cook announced the new iPhone 4S is good and people should buy it.
“It’s a good phone,” said Cook, walking out onto a stage and gesturing at a picture of the device projected on a large screen behind him. "It's got e-mail, the Internet, and you can get apps on it. Everybody should get one. It's good."
After standing in place for another four seconds without speaking, Cook walked off stage, at which point the houselights came up and all in attendance were asked to please file out of the auditorium
