This is the road I have taken. I bought my iphone 5 outright last year, rode out the rest of my contract and then switched to giff gaff. I've been with them a few months now and they are brilliant. I could easily survive on their £7.50 deal but have the £10 one just incase.
Need to start saving the pennies now to buy the iphone 6 when it comes out as my phone will be 2 years old by then so won't be worth an awful lot when I sell it. Don't want to go back to being tied into another 2yr deal!
Isn't one of the points brought out by some fans the reason why iPhones are so brilliant value for money is that they hold value better than other phones?0 -

Thanks. I did wonder why it isn't mentioned more often as it definitely feels like the most cost effective route, and with more control for the customer. I do love my old iPhone but the new apps don't like iOS5 so it looks like I should go for it and get get a new phone. I've never had a phone last 4.5 years before so the iPhone has a much longer life than most people seem to believe. I'm not 'upgrading' for the fashion of the iPhone but have found it to be an excellent business tool too; really simple to use.
I won't hold out for the iPhone 6 or I can see me holding onto this old iPhone forever!0 -
What is GiffGaff ?
I like the idea of £10 a month for 1GB data. But is GiffGaff a reliable network, does it have coverage to match EE, Voda, etc etc ?
When going abroad, is GiffGaff ok to use compared to the big companies ?
Are you in a fixed contract for £10 a month, or leave when you want ?
Can you keep your existing number and port to giffgaff ?
Who is selling the cheapest iphne 5s currently, any ideas ?0 -
I've used giffgaff for over a year. It's the O2 network so if that's strong in your area then you'll be fine. I switch it all off when overseas so not sure about overseas stuff but I use the £10 a month deal and have never gone over it.
Yes, you can keep your own number and port it over.
I'd recommend buying your iPhone from the Apple store but online and via Top Cashback. That way you'll get a bit of money back and have an unlocked phone.0 -
Thanks for the feedback "angrysharks" ... I didnt realise buying an iphone outright from apple, meant it came un locked. Nice to know.
Looks like quidco is doing 1% cash back
Also, I noticed on the apple site that if I send them my existing 4s 32gb, they would give me £135 for it. Not sure if that is good or not to be honest ! I would have to un lock it first though, but I think I can do that via EE when I leave them yes ? Dont they offer to un lock once the phone is out contract ?0 -
I'm not sure about unlocking as I bought my last phone direct from the Apple store so have only had unlocked phones. If you don't need your old phone it sounds like a good idea to trade it in. I doubt you would need to unlock it to trade in at the Apple store but you'd do best to check with them directly. Good luck!0

Vodafone wouldn't budge on my request to match a deal. I've been with them over 10 years too. Very disappointed. I also asked on Twitter and got the same answer.
When I said I would have to move on, just to get a better deal that is actually also with Vodafone! another rep suggested I look at the Employee Advantage scheme. This will give me 20% off my upgrade, but I'm still annoyed that they said all their deals are fixed and that they can't reduce them, which is a load of rubbish.
I might still call up to cancel to see if I get a better deal and then apply for the EAS too!My mantra is simple: If I don't help myself first, I shouldn't expect it from others. If I don't like something, I will change it. If I can't change it, I will learn to deal with it.
I accept responsibility for my own actions and my own situation. A sense of entitlement is not healthy and will only lead to consistent disappointment.0 -
Hi Jackiekaren,
I'm sorry to see that we haven't been able to offer you a package that you're happy with.
Just to clarify things regarding the Vodafone Employee Advantage scheme; if any package a customer agrees to is already discounted, they won't be able to add a further discount via the scheme.
Kind regards,
Lee

Thank you Lee
But I wonder if you can tell me why I'm being told that your packages are fixed when clearly there is room for negotiation based on the feedback on this site?
I really don't want to cancel my account after having the number for so long (I imported the number from Orange), but if I don't feel any further loyalty towards the company then I will go elsewhere for a better deal. I know you don't have to discount it, but I'm struggling to accept that there is no room for negotiation.
It feels unfair to have to keep paying more each time I renew aswell as having to pay for the handset. It used to be that the monthly payment and contract length always covered the cost of the handset. It's a considerable amount of money when all other bills are going up too
Thanks

did any of your old phones cost nearly 600 quid ??
theres always been the trade off of paying more upfront and getting the phone cheaper if you was willing to pay more you could get it without the upfront cost, the pay upfront option has always been there but is used a lot more now to keep the monthly repayments down on very expensive handsets0
