Preparing for winter III

Haven't posted in a while, to be honest I'm still waiting for summer!
Have only dispensed with the flannelette sheets and pyjamas on very rare occasions. (Resorting to cotton ones, for those who have other thoughts! It's never that warm in this country for me ... )
I just wanted to add a little tip that I discovered while trying to block out early morning sunshine... (I know, never happy am I?)
I tried my winter fleece linings first, which was a bit of an improvement but not great. I also have wooden venetian blinds up, so as a last desperate measure and just because we had some handy, I stood a large piece of cardboard between the blind and the closed curtains. It worked! I just put it under the bed during the day and reckon that it will add insulation in the winter. Worth a try... and free!
Interesting... we have been talking on here about cardboard blinds! Basically you concertina them, put holes in each side on each fold and use string to pull them up and down!
I would have thought cardboard was a really good insulator and am going to use it on the kitchen floor in winter! I stepped on a piece of an old box that had fallen out of the bin, and it was actually warm underfoot, as opposed to chilly laminate!
I am sure someone on here will post a link.0 -

It is also really absorbant so saves having to mop any spills.. you just replace the cardboard.. approved foods orders are my favourite source of cardboard ..LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -
I'm on the look out for flannelette sheets. If anyone knows where to get them from I'd very much appreciate it.
I have bubble wrap on my toilet window already, as of this week. I need a blind too but until I can get one I'm going to just prop up some cardboard over the space. It's only the loo, and who cares what it looks like just as long as I don't have a draught *ahem0 -
Inspired! :T
That is my only problem, getting boxes large enough
Boots, approvedfoods, kiddicare send huge boxes. I prefer the small ones AF use inside their huge boxes.. if something is spilled it is easier to lift and replace a small piece of cardboard than source a new huge box.
There are loads of shops here and they throw out loads.. I am not averse to a wee bit of binraiding!LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -

I got my sheets last year from Very, when they were on offer - be aware, if they're doing the buy 1 get 1 free, you automatically get 2 in a pack... We each now have 6 flannelette sheets, which is slightly more than we need... I've seen them in the Range, & got them from Dunelm mill before too.
With the cardboard, why not get the girls to decorate it so it looks like art work?0 -
I got my Flannelette sheets from Isme the other week when they were on offer but noticed the price has jumped right up again. I made the same mistake as you Spiky :rotfl::rotfl:Debt at LBM [strike]£17,544[/strike] £5700:TOver £14,000 PAID OFF :T

Getting ready for winter stage 1:Windows & external doors
We are aiming for our windows all to have rollerblinds close to the glass and lined curtains with additions fleece lining on the room side of the window sill, on average the gap between the blind and curtain is 16" . Our windows are at various stages of meeting our goal, I'm going to use this post to list what we are aiming for, where we are at and what we have achieved, I hope nobody minds.
Hall: [STRIKE]blind[/STRIKE] [STRIKE]curtains[/STRIKE] fleece lining
Dinning room: blind [STRIKE]curtains fleece lining[/STRIKE]
TV room: [STRIKE]blind[/STRIKE] curtains fleece lining
Bedroom 1:blind [STRIKE]curtains fleece lining[/STRIKE]
Bedroom 2:blind [STRIKE]curtains[/STRIKE] fleece lining
Bedroom 3:[STRIKE]blind curtains[/STRIKE] fleece lining
Bedroom 4:blind curtains fleece lining
Bedroom 5:blind curtains fleece lining
Landing:blind curtains fleece lining
For our remaing windows I do not think the blind, curtain, fleece lining is suitable, mainly due to practicle issues like damp so for these I intend to
Other:
Utility room: blinds
Kitchen: [STRIKE]blinds[/STRIKE]
En suite: bubble wrap [STRIKE]blind[/STRIKE]
Bathroom:bubble wrap
We have 4 external doors all wooden, we would like each door to have a thick lined curtain which is additionally lined with fleece as well as a draft excluder, we went round these doors last year and fitted draft excluding tape. We also need to fit the remainder of the door furniture to some of the doors (handles, escutcheons including covers to both the inside and outside as well as ball catches) we have a letterbox on the wall just outside the front door so this is something we will not have to try and insulate.
Door 1:[STRIKE]Curtain[/STRIKE] fleece lining draft excluder [STRIKE]door furniture[/STRIKE]
Door 2:Curtain fleece lining [STRIKE]draft excluder [/STRIKE] door furniture
Door 3:[STRIKE]Curtain[/STRIKE] fleece lining [STRIKE]draft excluder[/STRIKE] door furniture
Door 4:[STRIKE]Curtain[/STRIKE] fleece lining [STRIKE]draft excluder[/STRIKE] door furnitureFashion on a ration 2025 0/66 coupons spent

My radiator foil came today. Haven't opened as been working, but will look when back from hols. So chilly today. Think I might need bedsocks.
Also got a wind up radio, works ok and has torch and siren too. Might keep that for the car.
Tempted to use heating today but managed to avoid. Brrr. Hoping for some sunshine in Spain next week...Bossymoo
