Preparing for winter III

I'm highlands and islands - used to be an island-dweller - we have a multi-fuel stove for heating/hot water, electric with gas back-up for cooking. I dry my laundry on a pulley in the kitchen as it rains on the west coast a lot!!!!!! We expect to have gales 3/4 of the year (midgies the other 1/4) so keep everything as low as possible, and everything tied down.
some of my near neighbours were without electricity for four days earlier this week.
I'm most envious of your long growing season <sigh>

I'm always fascinated by people down south who get fabulous summers that go on for ever and have Roman remains in their gardens !
I so envy you that!
I live high and remote and I have calor gas for cooking and a coal stove for heating, because we get frequent powercuts. I have the said airer and hang clothes onnit in front of the fire overnight.
Swap you a 5 ft snowdrift for a Roman cemetary? :rotfl:
I must say our English Summers are most wonderful affairs. I am not sure I could cope with all that scottish landscapery without copious amounts of Vitamin d to make me feel human.
Maybe I need to get myself a holiday in real life circumstances like yours sometime!!!!
I hope you manage to keep warm in bed and in your living room.
I can't imagine how cold 5ft snow drifts make the house!#TY[/B] Would be Qaulity MSE Challenge Queen.

*I had no idea all these wonderful Scottish Posters and Posts are most enlightening*
I say i think then the REAL Winter prep takes place in Scotland and us Brits need to take note ( I am blessed and highly favoured to be 25% scots with a a variety of tartans to our family name nothing simple aye).
If you folks can survive out there in that incredible countryside Islands or Highlands me and I am sure others here will/do take our hats off to you.#TY[/B] Would be Qaulity MSE Challenge Queen.

I think British Weather is a source of envy to Scots. What a shame such un-encountered beauty has a difficult downside. I guess you scots must be very good at adapting to whatever the weather decides to throw at you so it would make you very hardy as people-a good thing; unlike us soft Southerners. (not wishing to spout stereotypes etc).#TY[/B] Would be Qaulity MSE Challenge Queen.

Scotland is part of Britain. Geographically, so it is unlikely to change.0

Err hate to point this out but Scotland is part of the British Isles so 'Scots' are Brits as well ( not getting into politics about this) and I am very proud that Scotland is my place of birth and I grew up there, if I ever have the money I would be back there........The British isles is made up from Scotland including Highlands and Islands ( incl Orkney and Shetland), Wales, Northern Ireland and England. Everyone from any of those places are 'Brits'
Sorry geography is something I love and I cannot bear it when people get it wrong, so end up being so pedantic .
Here its normal overcast and damp, beginning to feel I will never have a dry day again unless move. Want to put in 10 privet hedges where I put the 4 Holly bushes the other day but ground is so heavy with all the rain don't feel up to digging another 10 holes for them as they need far deeper holes than the holly did.Need to get back to getting finances under control now kin kid at uni as savings are zilch

Not me eeny, I'm so bloody demented I'd probly forget what I had asked. But if I remembered then yes of course Id say thanks
We've got sunshine here today:j Forget the housework, I'm heading for the garden. Plenty of time to do housework when it rains... Have a good day everyone:):):)
PS. Heard a good tip on Chris Evans this morning for those who still have to negotiate their Christmas tree out of the house. Cover it with an old duvet cover to contain as many of the falling needles as possible. (I would turn it inside out, less seams for the needles to hide in:eek:;))The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.
Thanks to everyone who contributes to this wonderful forum. I'm very grateful for the guidance and friendliness that I always receive from you.

Please and Thank You are the magic words;)0 -

no need to take your hats (or anything else off ) for us Scots, its just a bit of wind and rain nothing that we haven't seen before but on this occasion we were lucky not more people were killed or injured.
Last few days have been lovely and sunny and today the temp is 7 degrees had been up to 10 degrees earlier.0 -

Personally if I lived there, you wouldn't find me dead in a house, especially in the Highlands and Islands, without my Lakeland Dry Soon Heated 3 Tier Airer.
Were I to become MSE OS (ala me of course!) I regard the above as absolutely indispensable to doing troublesome laundry.
Can you really recommend it? We were thinking of buying one last year but were put off by reviews. We live in exactly the sort of place you described. It is windy one minute, raining or hailing the next and once in a while we see some sunshine.
I can't afford one ATM but if it really works I can save up for one. Would it be good for baby clothes? Not for me but for DD.business mortgage £0))''(+ Barclay's business kitchen loan £0=Total paid off was £96105 PPI claimed and received £13527
