Preparing for winter III

  • I'm feeling downright cheated by the lack of snow! Never have I been so prepared for winter; masses of logs stockpiled over the summer, an armageddon cupboard filled fit to bursting and not a single flake. :( Then, to add insult to injury, DH rang me earlier, on his southern family present run, to say he was driving through snow on the M25. Pah.

  • Hi Nanny - my OH rang me from Buxton earlier to say they'd had it quite bad over there. I've just rung him to tell him it's about an inch thick here and he says it's all gone in Buxton because it's been raining - the roads are clear! It's normally horrendous over that way! At least he shouldn't have trouble getting home tonight, hopefully.

settled snow? I live within the m25 "circle" and there was some snow falling for a few hours this morning but nothing settled, was more like slop. I really hope there isn't snow elsewhere on the m25 or it could be hell for OH to get home :(

We have lots of snow and it is still falling. I would be happier if DH, DD, DS1 and DSIL were all home.

And the bottom has just dropped off the front door!! Luckily it is the outside porch door but that now means we are much more exposed at the front. Door curtain is shut to keep out some of the draught.

We have a letter box cover but I have now lost my double glazing benefit of the porch. I knew it was being battered by the storms over the last few weeks but didn't realise it had weakened it.:( Something else to sort out.

I keep looking at the webcams from Flash and Cat and Fiddle; plenty of snow up there. It's tantalisingly close...

No, this was around 9am and he was driving through falling snow at that time but I don't think there was any sign of it settling. Oh, he was near the M4 exit when I spoke to him.

Does anyone know what the forecast is for the south/south east in mid Jan? Work want me to go to Vienna on the 15th to see clients on the 16th and although I know that snow the other end won't be an issue, but bad weather and heathrow don't mix well :D

Pooh - can you board the door up temporarily? And maybe line it with some kind of insulation? I've been covering some of my windows with bubble wrap from my approved food orders and I think it helps...

My OH drives M4/M25 so thank god it's not settling. Can't be dealing with him stuck in snow for hours or a mardy OH moaning about traffic :rotfl:
I'm going shopping with OH tomorrow for his family presents. His excuse for leaving it so late is that he's out 6.30-7 everyday for work but he doesn't work weekends!! That shall be fun... not!
Next year I want to make more OS gifts for people, like home made booze, nut butters and other food. We also have the resources to make lovely stone cheese boards, candle holders etc for people for free but not enough time this year. How nice would it be to be given a granite cheese board with a selection of cheeses and home made chutneys, jams and wine? Or marble candle holders with HM scented candles? I'm sure if I teamed up with my mum and sister we could make hampers better than Harrods :D Ah well, if only! There's always next year.

Earlier I posted something jokey on facebook about my dad leaving work for the pub really early and my one uncle got really serious and nasty about it! It's well known among friends/family he works long hours mon-thurs to finish early fri and he's in the dreaded public sector (but is one of the unlucky ones- he'd get paid double in the private sector and most of his colleagues lost their jobs this year), but my uncle started making nasty jokes then very serious comments about my dad and the public sector in general.
It really didn't make sense as he earns more than my dad and acts like his job is so tough even though he spends all day on facebook! My dad's job being outsourced to the private sector would have a serious negative effect his business too. Also his wife used to have one of those very controversial high paid jobs working for a charity which spent donations on high salaries and chased down money from wills so it's really quite rich to be nasty about my dad's job? I am partly inclined to think he is just copying jeremy clarkson because he loves him!
I'm now quite glad that they're jetting off on a posh holiday for xmas instead of spending it with the rest of the family!

We've got plenty of snow here, just on the eastern edge of the Cheshire plain. It's going to freeze on it too, so the paths will be treacherous!
