Hi Kittie - my de-humidifier is 390 watts. I should know how to do this kind of thing for myself but Im a complete eejit at workingout costs for anything.
The weather here is all still and grey but mild-ish, very uninspiring - I agree that some of the white stuff would at least make the place look nicer (tidier too in my gardens case!)
Has anyone got any suggestions to make about keeping some background heat on greenhouse in my studio(its a shed really). I did have a greenhouse fan heater the first year I was here but I gave that to DD for her room at uni.
I managed to get DS to help put in insulation for the walls but ran out of money by the time we got the ceiling and I would like to use it at weekends during the winter.

You can do more ...... click the first 3 you want to quote, go to "post reply" and they will appear. Then copy all the text.

Click the back button to go back to the thread, untick the 3 you've got ticked and then tick the next ones (up to 3) you want to quote.

Go back to "post reply" and the new ones will appear - then paste in the other 3 you've copied. HTH :)

Can be quite handy sometimes as I often see 4 I want to quote if I'm catching up on threads!

  • Few pages to catch up on ....... bloomin chilly here today! (Or rather this afternoon - it was lovely this morning & had all the windows open but the temp has really dropped and didn't notice until I realised I was frozen & the house is now like a freezer).

I think my prep's almost done - the gel dehumifidier things arrived & ones is in the room with the washing in so I'll see what happens. Can't really afford to buy a proper unit atm (saving for a new boiler which is slightly higher up on the priority list:eek: - keeping everything crossed mine makes it through this winter).

Need to sort the car tomorrow (back to work on Monday). Went out this morning and realised that although I have a scarf in their, I've obviously brought the gloves back into the house at some point so want to re-check the winter kit.

Think I may just stick the gas fire on for 10 mins or so as it quickly heats downstairs.

Popped to Mr A this morning & no sign of their version of yak-trax unfortunately - so will keep an eye out for them. Did manage to get a pair of fleecy pj's tho' (the e*bay ones arrived & are great for just now but not thick enough for the really cold weather). They're not fantastic but only me to see them & they look lovely & warm which is the main thing.

Frugal - DM visited on Thurs & brought my favourite dinner ..... I was thinking about you (darn it!;)) when I was preparing / cooking it :( but luckily managed to put all thoughts aside and enjoyed it just as much as usual!:)

Now, off to catch up on what I've missed!:)

If its a chest freezer and not scratched it should be ok, but do wipe the condensation off it. If it has got scratches the damp could cause it to rust. Uusally the workings and openings on a chest freezer are underneath, so unless a pool of water forms underneath it there should be no affect of condensation forming on it. Just keep an eye on it, but if you ever do spot any water underneath then do not walk in the water or touch the freezer, you need to turn the power off but do not do this with your hands - something rubber or turn off power at mains then the switch for the freezer - its just if water gets into the workings it could, not saying it will, mean electric is getting into water - now this is very unlikely, but just something you need to be aware could happen. Electric and water do not mix and although water forming under the a chest freezer should not cause problems its just the fact you said its old, so there is a chance of a break in the covering of the wiring and hardware. Usually chest freezers live happily anywhere, so just wiping off the condensation daily is the best thing to do at least to prevent it rusting, but really should be ok otherwise

If its an upright then that is not so good, as it is not really made to be outside - ok garage is not exactly outside but unless its a nice new build all airtight damp air will get in. Now that I am not so sure how to deal with - that is protecting the workings that are at the back of this, again should be sealed in, so should be ok, but again dry it off and keep an eye on it for rust.

I know today not only got my serious head on but my doom and gloom one, but really most likely be ok, just dry them at least once a day if possible as if it suddenly goes icy then that wet on it would freeze and that will not do the metal casing any good.

Not in a good mood, wanted to go shopping today but have waited in for Parcelforce to turn up with my bareroot hedges and they have not, not sure if I will accept them now on Monday as do not know how they will be stored till then and I will not know of any damage caused till next spring, so will phone hedges direct as soon as they open tomorrow.

Oh well will go and see if I can pick up any whoopsies in sainsbobs as they reduce about now.
Need to get back to getting finances under control now kin kid at uni as savings are zilch

    14/1000 x 220 = 3p an hour assuming your electricity costs 14p a kwh (unit)
    72p for 24 hours, £5.04 a week, £22.32 a month

    tugrin
    14/1000 x 390 = 5.5p an hour assuming 14p a kwh
    £1.32 for 24 hours, £9.24 a week, £40.92 a month

hells bells, it didn`t seem much per hour but adds up to a lot per month

lakeland heated airer 300w. Mine was on for 8 hours
14/1000 x 300 =4.2p an hour or 34p to dry a great big load enough to just switch off and air

pretty well comparable running cost to a de humidifier really but the de humid gets rid of the water for you, so is better if you don`t have excellent ventilation :)

I still have the cars to do - I am going to put my but into gear and get that done Tuesday afternoon I think! The leaves are coming down allot now and DH had the leaf blower/sucker out yesterday and got all of those up. The recycling garden waste bin is now full of them and very heavy!

It is, I have to say, very mild here at present and I am now starting to doubt whether we are going to have a bad winter like the last one. It has been grim this week with mist, murk, dark days and generally damp which has left me feeling deflated somewhat. We had some sunshine this afternoon but not enough to dry out the paths. I washed down the yard after lunch in the hope that it would dry, but it hasn't yet. I have decided to leave the boys out in the field tonight, they have their outdoor medium weight coats on and they were more than satisfied to stop out so I have laid down their clean beds and took their hard feed out to them just after 4pm. I shall probably go and put them out some hay so they can munch on that tonight.

I am probably going to get some extra Christmas bits and bobs in during the coming week. We got £10.00 of Tesco vouchers through the post and although I no longer shop at Te$c0's due to their ethics, I shall use those to buy things like biscuits for cheese, mince pies and a Christmas pud, which will take me nicely to around £10.00. DH fills the car up there, I don't so that is how we have got them.

I am going to see if I can dry the bedding on the line outside tomorrow and I intend to open up the conservatory to the outside air as it smells a bit 'fusty' in there iykwim. I am also going to give the house a really good clean through as well and clean the window sills outside. If I keep on top of things then if/when it does hit all those things are on top of!
