My old girl is 14 and NOT spayed and has had 2 litters. Her problem is that she 'marks' everywhere in an attempt at still being top dog over the 18 month old whom she hates and would like to kill. She has always been very dominant and determined to defend her position. Someone mntioned incintinence sheets a while back as they can be washed easily - but its getting the wretched dog to do it where I want her to.
Thrift - Iknow what you are going through - I had fitted carpet when I first moved in 2 years ago and it went half across the kitchen too. Well that stank pretty quickly so now Im resigned to painted concrete ith rugs until such time as Topsy has to cross the Rainbow bridge.debt free 2021 at current DMP rate[/COLOR] (probably be in an old peoples home by then)0 -
I to have that problem with my oldest girl - 14 in January, one thing I found that cleans and get rid of the smells is Dettol anti-bacterial spray, or the Dettol Floor. These are the only anti-bacterial that I have found that actually say they are safe for pets and children, you do not need to keep them away from the area for a time. In the SM it is dear £2.29 but shop around, my newsagent come grocers shop actually sells it and for much less than SM £129 - £1.49.
We got rid of carpets ( mainly because cleaning up the dog hairs off them was just to much) and have rugs that I can throw in the washing machine - Pixie only usually goes in the hall, which is solid quarry tiles thankfully, but of course wet can be walked into kitchen and living room, so made sure rugs in there can be washed - I admit the living room and kitchen rugs do not say washable on them, but they are soft carpet rugs with laytex backing and i just wash them anyway ( quick wash followed by drying in TD on low heat or out on line in summer), the hall rug does say washable on it and is made from the exact same material as the others. In summer I don't bother with any rugs at all, but in winter I find the rugs do make a difference. Both kitchen and living room have vinyl down - kitchen one looks and feels like light slate tiles, and living room looks and feeling like wooden flooring ( looks so real a few people who have come to house when they see it ask if they should take their shoes off so as not to damage flooring), both thick and very comfortable but no where near as slippy as real things for the dogs and clean much easier - when it rains 3 lots of muddy paw marks looks so messy.
For the Dettol spray or the floor one ( cannot get that as often as I used to now) I just spray everywhere, leave for 5 mins then mop, or if she has gone on landing spray the area again leave then pat dry. I had tried all the OS methods but although they clean nothing dealt with the smell, its you need the anti bacterial type to stop the bacteria that causes the smell. Its the only 'proper' cleaner I buy, vinegar and bicarb do for everything else, although I admit when we get visits from mice during the winter I do use the Dettol spray to clean my sides etc., just to be safe.
Most of the time it is just her ( Pixie) that will wet, but on days when I am not so good in the winter and hubby leaves around 6am so to early and cold for him to leave back door open, as he does in summer, they can all end up using hall, but not their fault as they cannot get out if I have not managed to get downstairs.
It definitely is a problem that is worse in winter, unless nice as you cannot air the house but so far everyone who comes to house and I ask can you smell anything have always said no, and most are not just being polite. If I could come up with some type of OS way of doing this rather than using chemicals I would. I tried essential oils but that only masked the smell not remove it.Need to get back to getting finances under control now kin kid at uni as savings are zilch

Oh I am somewhat relieved that it's not only me that suffers in silence, I have found that the only thing to neutralise the urine smell is biological washing powder and hot water, a pain on a grey hardwearing lino floor, but nothing ever touches the smell more than that I have found.
My problem is that I have heavy shedding cream pugs and it's hell on the school clothes I find myself trying to time when i put the bedding in as don't want the navy school clothes going in the machine after!!!! which wears me down as everything seems to be a planned ritual in this house regarding the peeing and washing.Thriftkitten

Welcome Cleggy, nice to see a fellow cornish pasty in the house...
Where do you hail from my country friend.....I'm in St Ives,
I am trying hard to panic about a mad winter snow in, the same as our winter prepping mid and highlanders, however, the chances of a blizzard down here are slim to none..... But that dosent stop me from wishing for one :rotfl:Thriftkitten

Welcome, Cleggie.
I went to buy some Christmassy gift packaging for HM chocolates, and I bought some moulds. It was only on the way home that I wondered - could I have used my silicone ice cube trays? Anyway, as I've said before I loved the HM cookies, chutney and mittens I got last year and wanted to have a go myself this year. I'm not very good at crafty/cooking/domestic stuff so I thought I'd start simple and hopefully build up confidence from there. Of course, I'm going to have to try it all out first to make sure I'm doing it properly ...
Christmas prep otherwise is not going well and I came back empty-handed today Think I might stick to online shopping as faras possible from now on!0 -
For the peeps with incontinent/naughty hounds - neat vinegar and neat vodka (cheapy stuff) get rid of the smell and will kill and germs.
My last few females were all on propalin syrup from the vets. This is good as you can reduce the drops to see how few you can dose with to get the desired effect. It takes a couple of weeks to get into the system and stop the wetting though. Our current girlie can`t have these as they give her the screaming runs, she has incurin tablets, she started off on two per day and we found that one and a half stops it but one is not enough, again these take a while to get into the system. The propalin is the cheapest. Have a word with your vets and see if they think its worth a try. Both are prescription only atm as they are hormones.
I don`t think that there is anything to stop a dog scent marking, we have a female that does it when outside but not inside, its funny to see, when we first got her she had alsorts of tests done to try and find out the problem - liver/kidneys/cystitis it was a good while before we worked out what she was doing. The vet was baffled too:rotfl:
If you can catch her marking maybe fill a squeezy bottle with water and give her a squirt to try to stop her? If she doesn`t like being squirted she may not do it as often.

Hi everyone, thanks for the welcomes!Hi Cleggie everyone is welcome here:)
How's your debtfree journey going?
Its going well thanks CH27, i am actually coping well with the expense of Xmas this year, which is a minor miracle as i am normally panicking at this time of the year! I am paying things off at a slow but steady rate and come January i'll only have the 1 debt left, but the biggest at approx £1500.Thriftkitten wrote: »Welcome Cleggy, nice to see a fellow cornish pasty in the house...

Hi Kitten!
i am originally from Launceston, but moved to Bude as soon i became a teenager. i stayed in bude until 3 years ago (when i was 29) and then moved to Plymouth as i started uni there. Bloody hated living in a city, so moved in the summer to Callington!
St Ives is beautiful!0 -
