Mould from damp is dangerous to health and the moisture must actually leave the room via something like a de humidifier

You're absolutely spot on about the dangers of mould.
Many people are unaware that you should ideally wear a mask when you are dealing with mould.

Operating on the instruction that even lurkers should post this evening (although I do occasionally post on OS)....

If you watch the American DIY/makeover type programmes on Sky or Cable, you'll see that they often treat mould in houses in a similar way as you'd treat asbestos. I don't know if they have different strains of mould but if mould is appearing it is better to be safe than sorry with a dehumidifier, particularly if anyone in the house has allergies or respiratory problems. Modern houses are so air tight that condensation can be a problem, especially if you are, like most of us do, drying washing indoors. If it is wet outside opening a window will not make any difference.

Ironically, I've got the opposite problem. I actually had to buy a humidifier for my house last winter (despite drying my washing over the radiators) because my floors, stripped and varnished in the summer when it had torrentially rained for a fortnight, were drying out and shrinking once the central heating went on. So when the rest of you are getting out the dehumidifier this year, I'll be sticking the humidifier on the landing. I did run a borrowed dehumidifier for a bit in my car last winter (I think the upholstery had absorbed a shed load of moisture during the wet summer) and that stopped the windows steaming up so badly and also stopped them icing up so badly on the inside.
  • Well winter must be around somewhere as just had an email from Hedges Direct telling me my Bare Root Hedge plants will be delivered tomorrow - they told me they can only be sent when its cold enough for the roots to become dormant. Here although its forever raining and sky looks so depressing, its not cold, grass is still growing and flowers still blooming, so guess it means the roots will have to be put in ground asap as they will start growing again when they arrive.

is it just me who thinks the sky has been looking very snowy of late and i wondered if anyone has a forecast ? i cant find the link to the one that was suggested.
Here the sky has been looking like that all week and its very mild, we have had rain, but the cloud covers looks as if it brewing something more they look as if they are full and heavy, just as they do when it snows.

Yes I also mentioned this last week, or early this week(I can't remember)..... the sky has been very threatening on and off all week!
Maybe it's me kinda hoping for a little of the white stuff![/QUOTE]

Snowing here today-- we have an inch on the ground and we are expecting more overnight. Temp is about 1C. Woodstove is burning as we speak.

Oh lucky you, I wish we had some, but I know I better be careful of what I wish for - can see us being hit by the most awful blizzards now. Still the white would cheer the place up rather than the awful grey everything is now, even the trees in their autumn colours look grey in the light we are having at the moment.

    Stay snug and warm

  • Am I the only one up ? I`m wide awake too, ready to make porridge but no-one else is moving. Serves me right for going to bed early :D

Looks like a nice day today, good for washing. Only I did mine yesterday and then it rained and rained but all dry now thanks to heated airer

I feel like we are waiting for something, in a bit of limbo. Tbh I want the cold weather to come now as I`m ready and feel that we need the change in seasons. Once that happens then we can look forward to spring.

I might do some more winter veg preserving as I have several big cabbages ready. Sauerkraut, the last two lots are doing very well and it will all keep over winter.

I dug out my bargain jaffles and panini irons yesterday. Cheap at 1/3 price from lakeland. They are cast iron bakers on long handles and they are for making things on a barbie, they`ll be useful if we get a prolonged power cut this winter as we`ll be cooking outside. Seasoning was a stinky nightmare and they aren`t as they should be but will improve when used

Have a lovely day everyone, I think I`ll be going on a bike ride with dh followed by a `pub` evening in the village hall tonight

Thanks Frugal - I went to the meter cupboard today to see how much power mine was using

Tell me what the wattage is, from the plate probably underneath and I`ll work out the approximate cost per hour for you
  • Morning all, turgin I hope you are feeling a bit better this morning, Kittie, you certainly sound full of vim.

Here also woken up to a fairly sunny morning, but as we have less cloud cover the temp has lowered and definately a bit chillier, but really if stays like this a perfect autumn day.

I am debating what to do about coopers of stortford, emailed them 4 times and apart from their automatic reply nothing and when tried phoning over 40 in the queue ahead of me, so when out shopping today I better start seeing if anywhere local has any of the things I was buying from them for my winter supplies.

Anyone know a good place for a 4 in 1 car starter - that was one of the things i ordered and received and email saying its been sent on 18th Oct, but have to accept I think it was not - they do not even sell them any more ( well didn't any day this week). Car was frozen for a few days last year and meant hubby didn't get into work, and as they only pay him p/t now plus any overtime it meant we lost out on income as of course the days he couldn't get in he had extra hours, so want one of those car starters to hopefully start our poor old girl ( not that old but at 5 getting on, although she wizzes through her MOT and her service in Sept went without a hitch, she is nothing fancy a Kia Picanto, but perfect just for the two of us, our Pippa as hubby named her as she is orange). So if anyone knows anywhere else I am likely to actually receive a 4 in 1 car starter from I would be very grateful.

Right back to knitting, best friend and her granddaughters were saying how they want the hats with flaps, the really nice Norwegian type ones with lots of colours and thick so making them one each for Christmas, but will pass them to them early if weather turns cold. My own granddaughter wants one but it has to be black with small white scull on it, so that reminds me must put black yarn down on shopping list don't have enough in to make one. Not sure about making one for me, being a woman of a certain age - 55 - I have my own central heating which comes on when it feels like, and minute its cold and I wrap up I am having to take off as much as decently possible to try and cool down, went out last year in tee- shirt and jeans a few times when temp was well below freezing, coat taken with and many strange looks received but never needed the coat, nor hats I made myself.

Oooh Kittie - would you mind working out what mine costs too please? Its 220w.... Obviously it isn't running all the time as there is a dial on it to control humidity but an estimate would be really helpful. BTW... 5am  T'is middle of the night to me :D

    Thank you :A

:hello: Hi Peartree - good idea about using the dehumid in the car - I didn't think of that and my car is always frosty inside so I will try that - thanks :)
