Sorry to quote my own post :o but does anyone know the answer to this one please, or should I be posting on another thread? Would like to get this sorted before the really cold weather sets in if poss :D

Prepareathome has given a much more detailed post than this one but IMO you should get a dehumidifier.

I got mine a few years ago to deal with a sopping conservatory. I have since moved and use it upstairs in a cold built in wardrobe (2 outside walls and north facing). I leave it on in there and because of its brilliant drying capabilities I am able to take my washing straight from the machine and hang it in the wardrobe where it dries overnight :D (I don't do ironing ;) )

The mould that had started to appear has cleared so I no longer have to worry about it.

They are pricey but definately worth it.

    Hi Frugal
What kind of de-humid. did you get - i could do with one that does what yours does - my bionaire is about the size of a calor gas heater and I worry about the cost of running it.

It's still very mild here for the time of year, still no heating on but it's been grey for the best part of a week now - I really need some brightness to take some photos for eBay!!

DH has not been really on board, been sniggering & complaining about all the stockpiling going on. But yesterday the Cott*n Traders boots arrived - tks to OP for that - & he was seriously impressed:T I got us both a pair. He managed to fall over & hurt his leg twice last winter, in the garden - a combo of thick ice & very large boisterous (sp?) puppy. Also a factor was his shoes having glass-like soles:eek:
He must be getting on board though as last night when he came to bed, he said he'd been sourcing coal + wood locally on the internet, wonders will never cease. He's also impressed with his fleece lined trousers from Crag*oppers, he put on another pair of trousers yesterday to go to the PO & really noticed the difference:eek: I on the other hand kept mine on when going to the supermarket & was sweltering:rotfl:

Also the free pipe insulation arrived from YW yesterday, very nice but need about 20x the amount..

Gah I have gone on a bit - sorry - I am light years behind everyone else's prep so still have a way to go!

Bubble wrap is apparently a good insulator, we're going to try this in our freakishly cold house (where we're lodgers, so have no control whatsoever on how things are done) this year and see how we go. :)

Apparently you can stick it to the glass with water. :T

  • hi all,

i have been lurking in the background on this thread for quite a while. me my fiancee and little girl moved house for the first time about 3months ago now. before that we didnt realise how much money was needed for gas/electric ... i cant really think of anything else is there a thread with just peoples lists on or are they jumbled in this thread?

It is a shock to the system, isn't it? :) People have posted lists and updates from time to time, in this thread and the two before it. Now winter is (just about) upon us, I think we've moved on to a 'keeping things ticking over' phase. You're lucky to have your solar panels and insultation and seem to be doing some of the right things to prepare. If you cook, and you haven't done this already, maybe you could make doubdle batches of things from time to time and put half in the freezerto use at a later time?

Here the sky has been looking like that all week and its very mild, we have had rain, but the cloud covers looks as if it brewing something more they look as if they are full and heavy, just as they do when it snows.

    Not at all :D

In all honesty - I have been wanting to write a post like yours as people are drying washing in the house, via the central heating... and don't seem to realise that the water that evaporates has to go somewhere and hangs in the air making the room feel colder, and causing damp! Therefore you really need a couple of windows open!!!

I just couldn't be assed :rotfl:and you explained it perfectly :T

:T I am feeling rather smug and proud of myself as, after years on MSE website, I have today figured out how to multi-quote :rotfl: Expect lots of multi-quotes from me now as I will have to show off :D

Anyway, YES! I am not too far from you (I don't think) and to me, the skies have looked very heavy with the white stuff!

Is def too warm but.... could it be snow up there (obviously much colder in the sky) but falling as rain by the time it gets here? :o Or is that stupid? :o

Right then.... Must be pyjama o'clock followed by beef stew and dumplings :D
