  • Right off to B and Q this weekend to look for letterbox excluders, have already re-nailed in the back door to stop more draughts.
And yes, Winchelsea - we are totally in Hastings, and very near Clive Avenue (top of the hill) so have big issues with the sea wind bashing us! Do love it here though, and our house!
  • I have poor circulation and the doc told me to wear socks that aren't too tight at the ankle/on the leg and gloves that cover the wrists.
This means the socks won't stop circulation and the gloves warm the pulse points on the wrists.
    Normal people worry me.
  • Hi all,
Fairly new to MSE and the forum but just wanted to say I found this thread last night and couldn't sleep 'till I'd read it all!

We're moving at the end of November to a great big old house and I'm p*oping myself about getting it winter ready so late in the year-so this thread has been great in giving me some ideas to prioritise!

Love your style-you guys are clearly after my own heart (there's no heating on until everyone is wearing three layers and wrapped up in blankets!).

Off to buy my first sewing machine this afternoon, a reluctant cash outlay which I'm viewing as an investment (there are a LOT of windows in the new house!).
Hope you don't mind me lurking in the background stealing all your ideas!

 Welcome Sarahl1 Glad you are finding all the tips useful - don't forget to post some of your own if you think there is something missing :D

 hello to all our other preppers :) I have done a winter clean of the living room (partly because I found another false widow spider, but this time in the house  and I am paranoid about me or the DDs being bitten so everything has been pulled out, vacuumed and sprayed with Raid and Indorex to be doubly sure!

Planning an evening crafting in front of the fire with my Yank*e tart in the burner! Lovely :)
  • Wow what a great thread!!!

Having a few little issues with a very very cold hallway, we have a porch which is only a brick thick, it was thrown up when heating/winter costs werent a issue, but now money is tight and its time to get winter ready.

Any ideas of how I could keep it warm? I was thinking of putting curtains over the front but its all cladded so not sure how I would do it?

I am going to make a draft excluder!! I close my curtains early through out the house, just trying to really keep the heat in.

    Sorry for rambling xx

Hi sarahl and lost/nervous - welcome to the mad (but not cold) house!

About the hallway - I used a staple gun to put a curtain-y layer of fabric over my external bedrrom wall and it does seem to ave made a bit of difference. I wonder if blankets instead of curtains might be warmer? You could sew a channel along one side and then use a garden bamboo to push through then you could put it on a couple of strudy cup-hook thingys.

That sounds like a good idea, I have a staple gun, As it is quiet a big area I would like to make it look nice and using a bamboo would make it sturdy. I could use blankets and then some nice material over the blankets. Youve got me thinking.

  • Was thinking earlier that i wish the whole house was as warm as the airing cupboard and then realised that I am really not utilising this space at all, its full of carboard boxes that should be in the loft! I have no shelves in there so earlier I fashioned a hanging rail and i put a wash in there hung straight on their hangers. This was at 1.30, just had a feel and i reckon another hour and a half and they'll be dry. Bonus of this is they can then get hung straight into the closet. (another area that's really not utilised well). This site really gets you thinking, its great.

Thats a great idea, I miss my airing cupboard so much, we went from a back boiler to a combi a couple of years back and I miss it so much, the drying potential was so good! Well done in utilising this space! And for some more money saving and job saving
