Preparing for winter III

Am ashamed to say I have failed at my post!!!!!!
We have found ourselves with NO WATER here in the TR26 area since about 10am this morning....... All of the winter stores I have stockpiled and the nearest thing to any kind of liquid I have in my stash is fabric softener:rotfl:There has been a burst water main and although some of the town has water, the houses at the top end still have NONE due to not enough pressure, some say they are bringing the bowser for us to collect supplies, others at south west water say we have to wait....I finally folded about an hour ago and went to the shops only to find the shelves bare of water D'oh, only 1 little lone bottle left enough for a couple of cups of tea, the loos have been flushed through with water from the water butt in the garden...... grrrrrr wish they would hurry up, it's smelling like a farm in the thrift household!!!..... on my very next "to do list"........ stock pile of water not loo rolls or fabric softener.Thriftkitten

OK its official - I am a Yankee convert - went to the garden centre today and lo and behold there they were. Currently sitting sniffing Winter Wonderland - its brilliant! Have rigged up a sort of burner using a tealight lantern and jar with silicone cupcake mould!!!
Cant believe how early it was dark today and the clocks havent even gone back!! I hate it.debt free 2021 at current DMP rate[/COLOR] (probably be in an old peoples home by then)0 -
Still got the 4.5tog duvet on our beds - but we do have quilted throws to pull up if it gets really cold. No heating on in the bedrooms and the window's always open, but I still kick my throw off during the night.Normal people worry me.0

The new room is so damp that yesterday I found mould growing on my leather jacket:eek: Stupid stupid cheapo extension! I don't even have carpet underlay, I can feel where the concrete has chipped off and crumbled up under the carpet. Which means I also need to buy a mat to exercise on as it's killing my tail bone!
I'm looking for a good deal on a dehumidifier-heater in one and some new pillows. My current ones are top notch fogarty (got for pennies in debenhams sale) but have gone all weird and clumpy and are a nightmare.
And after burning myself with food/drink three days in a row my duvet now needs cleaning and I am no longer consuming anything but water sitting on it!!
And I need to get my uggs resoled.
And I need to get down to uniqlo for the heat-tech sale.
Grrr, you never notice these things until the last minute. So much for preparing for the winterTime to trawl grabbit, ebay and hotdeals... And my quarterly rent is due on nov 3rd, and my university fees are due just after, and it's christmas :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Sorry things are tough at the moment adelight. I have a dehumidifier (years old) and it's brilliant, there is a washing drying setting on it and this does warm up the room, but not as much as a radiator, just takes the chill off. Modern ones will probably be much more efficient.
Hope you get everything sorted.

Have been following this thread on and off for a while and feeling quite smug that I was fairly prepared for winter, got my draught excluders, double glazing film on the windows, heated airer, thermal socks, pjs etc and when Ive read stuff about people stocking up on candles etc I thought it wouldn't really apply to me as (fingers crossed) I live in a big town and we don't get power cuts.
However tonight one of the fuses in my fusebox blew and most of the lights in the house went off, followed by me rummaging around in the pitch dark to try to find candles, lighters/matches and a torch which I knew were somewhere but not exactly where
You are probably all much wiser than me and do this already but I am now going to make sure that I keep all my candles/lighters/matches/torch in one place (rather than random places all over the house!) and also some fuse wire as I apparently have the old kind of fuse box that need wire to fix a bust fuse.
So Im ending today a wiser and more humble woman0 -

I looove this. It's top of my list for nearer Christmas. What I love about them is that open and unburned they can really give the room a nice scent.
I'm so tired but not sleepy. I think the nights drawing in is having an affect. OK, being up marking and organising until 3AM on Tuesday wasn't a great idea but I couldn't sleep last night either. I finally had enough of lying doing nothing and got up to make some soup, which was nice to come in to this eveningI was AT work before it began getting properly light today.

Hi everyone!
Newbie and Lurker alert - what a combination!
Just wanted to jump on and thank you all for the amazing tips you have shared over the months. I have read every single post in all 3 threads (it has taken weeks and is so addictive). But I am so much more prepared for whatever this winter throws at me, though really hoping we get away with it..please, please...
Last winter was a complete nightmare, totally unprepared for weeks of deep snow. Our village was so bad that the local and national BBC news broadcast from here for quite a few nights (I suspect it was the village shop's bacon sarnies that drew them in).
I have one tip to add to the zillions already on here - for those people who find that their multi fuel stoves go through coal and wood like no one's business, perhaps think about using phurnacite instead. This was recommended to me by the guy who replaced my stove a couple of years ago. I use CPL Distribution and have found them very reliable. Need to order a reasonable amount to have it delivered but I find that a few handfuls, together with firelighters (toilet roll inner tubes), newspapers and a few sticks easily lasts me all evening. Much more effective than coal, I've found. No good for open fires though, I'm afraid.
Hope this helps someone in the same way you've all helped me
First post (phew!), can't find the smilies etc, but hope to for next time.

Hi folks
Just wondering if any of you prepared peeps can help. I am trying to get some flanalette sheets, on budget, and cant find any. Managed to get fitted sheets in Tesco but not the flat sheet.
Has anyone bought any recently that they can recommend. Its always a bit of a gamble on ebay if they are any good.
Many thanks to you all for a brill thread, still working my way through. Bought the cling film double glazing for the porch so need to get busy witht that.0
