hi everyone, love this thread :)

Has anybody tried using that plastic stuff you can get to put on windows to act as double glazing... if so, does it work to keep out draughts?? Would love to know. Thanks in advance!

it works really well but its a nightmare to get the residue of the frame if you need to take it off.

  • Thanks Helen, you've just reminded me of something I meant to ask when they were talked about, but forgot!:o

Does anyone know of anything you can get for people who already need to wear glasses to drive? (something to fit over them?)

    TIA

I wear glasses, and pop the £3 ebay ones I recommended on here over the top as they are quite large. As it is dark and I only use them when driving, I'm not overly worried what I look like when doing this ;)

  • Hello, not been on in a while and my this thread has sprouted wings!

All prep is now done. OH is putting the chunky tread tyres on the 4x4 in a fortnight and that's really about it for us.

Pantry is fit to burst. New freezer that eventually arrived has got some stock in it already and shall keep adding whoopsied items. Got enough cosy clothing, boots and blankets to keep us going. Cats are sorted.
Got a Grou*on deal for the boiler to be serviced so just have to organise.
House is wind and water tight, so much so, that we have not had the heating on yet. I was roasting under the 13.5 togger the other night!Crazy!

Interesting to read about government in Scotland trying to get prepped for Winter. Shall be waiting to see what happens this year after the farce on the roads and streets last year.

P.S If any of you near C*stco soon, thay have oodles of winter ware: Trespass jackets, salopettes, yaktrax, gloves, handwarmers, ski socks and blankets. Not sure how prices compare to interweb but maybe worth a look. Can't recommend Lidl ski socks and salopettes highly enough either. HTH

Have a great day from a sunny Fife!

I've been to Mr As and picked up 13.5 tog duvets for me and the DDs to have on top of our mattresses - they are so comfy to lie on and very snuggly :)

Also got the 3 for £3 de icer :T

Then I picked up a few other bits and bobs...:eek::eek: £100 :eek::eek:

But that did include the duvets, obviously, slippers for both DDs, thermals for us all, a dress for DD2, tops for them both, fleecy socks and various other things that we needed.

Still haven't got around to getting the front curtain pole back up which is bad of me as not only do I hate people being able to see in (only got nets up) but must be losing a lot of heat thru it.... Mind you, not had any Central Heating on yet, just a fire in the evening and that keeps the house snug for the next day too :T

I think the gas man will be round knocking on the door to check I haven't fiddled the meter when they get the next reading :rotfl: :rotfl::rotfl:What with the new, highly efficient boiler, and the open fire, my gas consumption is piffling compared to last year :rotfl:

Still haven't lagged the infamous pipe to the WM in the outhouse  I will get around to it - and still haven't drained down outside tap :rotfl: I am hopeless! Still got a way to go with winter preps but have done more than any year in the past :)

BTW, is anybody else secretly hoping for a bad winter just for the satisfaction of being totally prepared for it? :o I usually hate winter (S.A.D. sufferer) but i'm almost looking forward to it :o

The thought very fleetingly entered my mind the other day - it was quickly banished & hopefully won't return!

Finally got my boiler service sorted - they wouldn't let me even book it until the contract renewed which was a bit of a pain as I really want it done while I'm still at home (to save a days holiday).

When I phoned they said it takes up to a week for the system to update ..... errrrrr I don't think so. After much "deliberation" and pointing out that they cancelled 3 times on me last year (without informing me = wasted holidays = very unhappy rising!) the lady said she'd ring me back and .... it's getting done on Friday!:j

It's the last year it can be covered as it's ancient so I really need to restart the "new boiler fund" that I started around 2 years ago and made 2 payment into .....:o
    Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)
    2016 Sell: £125/£250
    £1,000 Emergency Fund Challenge #78 £3.96 / £1,000
    Vet Fund: £410.93 / £1,000
Debt free & determined to stay that way!

My thermal socks from Cotton Traders arrived today.. and my ankle boots and a few roll neck tops.. Gotta love extra layers!

I have gutted the food cupboards/freezer/fridge so I can make a start of stocking up on basics after realisng veryone else seems to have weeks or months of worth of food stashed.. I have 4-5 DAYS! We had freeze scrapings fo dinner tonight... and I am going to start saving for double glazed replacements for the 2 bedrooms not yet done and a chest freezer... I WILL have these things next year.

Back door measured for a curtain so that is on my very soon o-do list.. i need to dig the fabric out of the back of the understair cupboard... I STILL need to do DD2s second curtain and put her blind back up..

I have managed to get a few additions to my winter wardrobe over the last week but need to get some thermals in case conditions do turn arctic! ;)

Had a loft survey through energy suppliers recently and will have the loft super insulated before the end of November, booked a boiler service for next week. Fingers crossed it will behave over winter!

I have packed a mini emergency kit for the car: wind up torch, blanket, a few snacks, bottle of water, a travel first aid kit etc.

The front garden looks lovely with winter hanging baskets up, daffodil bulbs planted and pansies / violas beginning to bloom.

Over the weekend I plan to make or buy a draught excluder for the front door, clear back garden (the hedge looks huge!) and clear out loft for insulation folk. At least if I'm doing all of that I can't really be out and about spending! :rotfl:

Lots of great ideas on this thread - thank you!

  • I got dd her socks :) 99p in BM stores. Nice fluffy ones and some ladybird slippersocks. They had quite a few animal ones like a crocodile.
They've got some nice flanelette pyjamas in too, but I've got her some already for Xmas.

Got dd her velour tracksuit from Lidls today too ....... so she is all kitted out!

I'm going to make a list tomorrow to see what else I've got to do. I'm struggling a bit with a broken finger right now so some things might have to wait. I don't think I can manage the lawn or hedge.

I'd love to throw some money on the gas and electric this week but there is a fab BOGOF cat food offer on at the mo. So want to stock up on that.

Hope evryone is doing well xx

  • Pity the poor teacher, she does'nt seem to have a blanket does she.
I remember being at school in the 60s and we had no heating at school for weeks so some of us got together, gathered some facts on the minimum allowed temperature workers were allowed work in,mustered up support and went on strike.
We went in for our registration but then for the whole of that week three quarters of the school walked.
It was even on the evening news and in the newspapers as in those days kids did'nt behave like that:rotfl:,funny thing was after weeks of doing nothing they soon fixed the heating and we were back at school with the missing parts miraculously found.
That little episode learnt me a big lesson which was about people.
I realised some people will moan but won't put their own neck on the line to do anything and will always rely on other people to take the risks and punishments but are the first to take the rewards.
It put me in good stead for life after school.
