Well rosie - that poster seems to be happy with the situation but the chap I saw yesterday was saying that people who need hearing aids will have to pay whatever - and as it is a free service now I dont see how that is a good thing. Obviously the private sector are only in it to make a buck and will be pushing all the expensive gadgets as they did with me in my original visit to SPecsavers where I ended up paying £800 for 2 rather inadequate hearing aids which have now bitten the dust 18 months after having them fitted - hence my visit to the hosp.
I do not think this is a good thing - more and more people are going to need hearing aids as we reap the rewards of mp3 players etc so lots of jam for specsavers!!!

ALso went to the hospital to get 'measured' for new hearing aids - the audiologist told me that the NHS are putting out the audiology departments of hospitals to be run by SPECSAVERS!!!!!!!!!!!
Apparently the y do all the hearing in Cambridgeshire already - this is disgraceful in my opinion - what is the country coming to?

Honestly, they all go to the same 3-4 manufacturers anyway, doing it via Specsavers means things will be arranged much faster and if you have problems or need adjustments to them later on you will be waiting a lot less.

I used to work for one of the more expensive high street hearing aid companies. You will be better off, seriously.

Most hearing aids have a warranty of about two years....

Whilst I'm sat here, I thought I would say a big thank you to you all,
I have been ghosting on here for several years, I " discovered" you all one snowy day at work, when we had been moved into temporary offices due to a refit. What a revelation you have been!

Then I was running a home with DH, Ds Dd all at home leaking light and heating, they all thought I had gone mad, going round the house with my list of things that needed doing or buying. What a difference it made the first year, unfortunately my DH became very ill eighteen months ago and things became very difficult and needing chemo ment he felt the cold badly, but as usual this thread came to the rescue with lots of tips from less able people. Sadly my DH passed away in the summer, my DS is now married and it's me and my DD at home, but with all your very generous hints and tips, and your kindness and support for others we are managing each day.

This will be the first winter for 35 years I will have been on my own, it's a little scary and the feeling of resposibility is huge.

This board and threads have become a bit of a life line, because I know if I don't know the answer someone on here will.

    Thanks guys:T

I'd like to give you a (((hugs))) xxx

Just back from the shops and i`ve stocked up my tinned dog food supply,my cupboard is stuffed so until DH goes fishing again at the weekend i`m happy. Normally they only share one tin per day between them as they eat other food too but for convenience when camping DH takes quite a few tins.

I have a spare sack of one type of food stashed in a spare room upstairs and a sack of each in the kitchen cupboard so i`m happy atm.

I am considering ordering a couple more sacks though as 1) i`ve found a supply at a better price than previously and 2) if we do get lots of snow i`ll have a stock in just in case the shops don`t get their deliveries.

What do you all think? Am i going crackers? :D

The slowcooker will be on soon as i`m going to make some chutney and i`ve no intention of slaving over a pan for ages, i also need to make chilli for tonight and i`m going to make some pork pie filling too. I make it like a meatloaf atm as i`m dieting so can`t have the pastry. The low carb diet does let me have the filling though *drools*

Young hound has just been shaking her giant teddy bear and it has a hole in it  it looks like its snowed in here so i`d better get picking it all up and restuffing it before i sew it up. Better not hoover just yet until she`s finished her mad half hour :rotfl:

LilyMae - Have a (((hug))) we are all here for you - usually at all times of the day and night so if you get lonely just give one of us a shout.

Lucy - I just didnt have a good experience with the specsaver audiologist - I didnt have functioning hearing aids for 2 months from the first test. It was a part time branch in a little market town and they didnt have a hearing cenrte in the city where I work so it took forever plus the lady seemed very rushed the whole time. I will be getting the NHS ones free and I know they are made by Siemens but its the principle - the NHS should be free a point of service.

SunnyDay - nothing to do with winter prep really but when I got my new pup I tracked down the best deal I could and then ordered 3 15kg sacks, enough to take him to 9 months when I'll gradually switch him to adult food. I tried him with a small pkt from a petshop first. I might have a bit too much or not quite enough because I only did a rough and ready calculation of his needs, not being sure how big/fast he would grow, but nothing will be wasted.

I got free delivery because of ordering so much, it will be well in date when it's finished, I had the storage space required and now I don't need to think about dogfood for ages. I'm running out of catfood so will be repeating the exercise for that.

Add in the potential of running out over winter and I would say stocking up is a good thing - but do shop around, I rarely use a supplier more than once because I always go for the best deals available at the time and as the food is branded it's the same wherever I get it from.

Oh, and I'm very familiar with soft toy snow

I went to M&S today and lashed out £14 on a long sleeved "layering" Tshirt type vest (well, was on the vest racks). It's supposed to use the heat from your body to heat up and stay warm....though it's not thermal. Anyway, I shall wear it under jumpers when it gets really cold.
I don't usually spend all that on vessies, but I've heard good reports- so I just hope it's effective!

I bought these last year and they are very good. Warmer than a long sleeve tee but probably not as warm as a thermal.

I moved into a new house 6 weeks ago and recently checked the radiators out, i went to bleed them all, the 2 in the lounge made no hissing noise so i assumed it was fine yet they hardly heat up at all, any ideas?

I hope you have got this sorted out.

LilyMae, so sorry for your loss, welcome to the thread, I hope you become a regular.

Just spoken to the carpenter (whilst polishing more of the reclaimed brass) and my window fitting starts on the 31st October - pray for a dry day ladies!

My slippers from last year have fallen apart so I need to replace those this coming week and get DS3 snow boots.

Winter duvets are going on the beds this weekend.

Need to get the front door draft excluded too - may see if Carpenter can do this with better stuff.
