Preparing for winter III

Hi All, this has probably been mentioned before......if so I apologise
In amongst everyone's stash of tins what about a spare tin opener or two? - just in case - like me in the past - it breaks when you least expect it - luckily our garage was still open - I have stashed one in my tin cupboard and the other in the 'Power Cut' box as we would most likely be having a tinned feast during power cut......
Just a thought - also as we do not always buy tins with ring pulls - and do not always resort to serrated knife or screwdriver and hammer!!!!

You know the film The Shining? How do you think they ate over the winter without getting fresh food in?
Was just thinking how great it would be to not have to go shopping at all for say the month of December, but how would you manage without the various perishible thigs you tend to eat? ..Maybe they just ate rubbish meals. I'll have to catch that movie again sometime and see! (brain is wirring round tonight!:o)1,2 & 5p: Christmas day food £9.31

50p: Christmas presents £3.50

Going to stock up on cat food next and cupboard stuff.
Wish I had a big chest freezer to stock up (no room).
Apparantly its been snowing in some places today!
I`ve got tons of bird food in this year, various seeds, fat balls, suet pellets (they go mad for these) raisins, nuts etc I remember last year how hungry they were and i was putting two lots of food out twice a day and the garden was teeming with them. I couldn`t keep up so as well as all the little packets i have a 12.5 kilo sackI was having to put fresh water out four times a day last year as it was freezing so quickly.

Ha i love the way that your brain is working, got me thinking now
Today i my day off YAY!!! i will be mostly doing housework and a bit of shopping but i really need to get the kitchen curtains altered and up, i`ve been trying to do this in bits for weeks and i`ve failed miserably.
The outside tap will be drained and turned off today and then my mind will be at rest as i worry about this every year, i have a list kicking around somewhere that i need to find with all the rest of my little jobs on, looks like a busy day ahead.
Its warmed up quite a lot and its now 7 degrees outside and 18 in so much improved from a couple of days ago :j

Hi,
I had two radiators that didn't heat up and I looked on a DIY website. The pins were sticking inside the valve, I had to remove the valve, tap the little pins (gently) with a hammer which made them pop out and put WD40 on them so they no longer stick....then replace valve.
Hope this helps.
Hi, I had new gas central heating in February, the contractor who fitted it said to keep the control on the radiators up to the highest point, on mine it's 5 when you turn the heating off for the summer.
What happens when you don't is the remaining water hardens with scale etc especially in hard water areas so the pin is held down. If you leave it open it remains up.
Hope this makes sense!0 -
Marylin - I havent seen the film but in the book the hotel has massive walk in freezers (nasty scene set there I remember) so I guess the presumption is they had loads of frozen stuff - US has ben ahead of UK in that dept for years.
WHoops Ive shown a weak side of myself yes I do like Stephen King but only in the daylight when Im feeling strong!!!!debt free 2021 at current DMP rate (probably be in an old peoples home by then)0 -
Whilst I'm sat here, I thought I would say a big thank you to you all,
I have been ghosting on here for several years, I " discovered" you all one snowy day at work, when we had been moved into temporary offices due to a refit. What a revelation you have been!
Then I was running a home with DH, Ds Dd all at home leaking light and heating, they all thought I had gone mad, going round the house with my list of things that needed doing or buying. What a difference it made the first year, unfortunately my DH became very ill eighteen months ago and things became very difficult and needing chemo ment he felt the cold badly, but as usual this thread came to the rescue with lots of tips from less able people. Sadly my DH passed away in the summer, my DS is now married and it's me and my DD at home, but with all your very generous hints and tips, and your kindness and support for others we are managing each day.
This will be the first winter for 35 years I will have been on my own, it's a little scary and the feeling of resposibility is huge.
This board and threads have become a bit of a life line, because I know if I don't know the answer someone on here will.
Thanks guys:T0 -
Awww LilyMae - dont be daunted by being on your own - I am too and there are many others as well. We are all here to support each other and have a laugh (dont tell the board guides BUT we someties go off topic!!!!!!!!).
I am so sorry for your loss - that will be hard I know - but looking after yourself is what your dear OH would want you to do so well done for posting. Hugs and welcome.xdebt free 2021 at current DMP rate (probably be in an old peoples home by then)0 -
Oh LilyMae, you're in the right place for help about winter. These guys on here are just fab, as you know, and help and advice is only a post away. Dont dread winter, by spring you'll wonder why you were ever worried about. But then this winter is different, its a first after your loss. And anyone who's lost someone knows that the first everything is daunting. First birthday, first Christmas, first anniversary. But this first winter you're not on your own, far from it, come on in and enjoy the warmth of hospitality

... the audiologist told me that the NHS are putting out the audiology departments of hospitals to be run by SPECSAVERS!!!!!!!!!!!
Apparently the y do all the hearing in Cambridgeshire already - this is disgraceful in my opinion - what is the country coming to?
Tugrin, there's some useful information here and post #736 after that one (the poster is an audiologist I believe)... don't throw the string away. You always need string!
