Air bricks in the outside walls and gas vents etc should never be covered but vents in windows are OK to close off. In fact some window vents have closing mechanisms. And some, like my 22 yr old double glazed units, have no vents at all! And all the windows, except for the opening pane at the top of the bathroom window where the mechanism is sprained, are in perfect working order - no built in obsolescence in 1989!

I remembered a keeping warm trick this morning - I can't wear clothes with tight necklines - polo necks, even turtle necks. Plus the bit between my shoulders feels the cold. Answer, a silk square, folded into a triangle, knotted in front and tucked under my clothes all round - soft, warm, not constricting - lovely. It really made a difference today.

tubzy - when you say new house do you mean new build or just new to you? If new to you how old do you think the heating system is?

  • I went to M&S today and lashed out £14 on a long sleeved "layering" Tshirt type vest (well, was on the vest racks). It's supposed to use the heat from your body to heat up and stay warm....though it's not thermal. Anyway, I shall wear it under jumpers when it gets really cold.
I don't usually spend all that on vessies, but I've heard good reports- so I just hope it's effective!
    Normal people worry me.

Does it count that my multifuel burner was delivered today:):) It's currently sat in the hall but isn't being fitted until the 10th November unless they have a cancellation.

Well I drove up to get my flu jab and the nurse asked why we were doing it... "Because I don't want flu" I said, confused... She went on to tell me that I wasn't able to have it because I am not high priority  I understand why some people need it more than others and those people should get it first but why on earth didn't they ask me when I called to book it???

She told me I could go and pay for one at sainsburys... off I trot to sainsburys... managed to find DDs some PE pumps (been looking for ages for their size) and new school skirt for DD2 who is now in clothes a year/size older than her twin  a few bargainous tops for them and a Basics stick blender... Grand sum of £27  Swiped my nectar card and it asked me if I want to redeem vouchers.... Good idea I think and knocked off £5, then another, and another..... Finally I paid 13p for my shopping.... cash :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Then!!! The awkward moment when you wonder why the man opposite you is staring... Then realise its your son  :o:o:o I really need to get my eyes tested :D

So I get to the sainburys pharmacy - long queue as ever - they don't do flu jabs

I'm giving up today and going back to bed I think

Sorry, wandered a bit OT there :o

Boys & I all have asthma, so when DS2 & I got the letters from our GPs calling us to book flu jabs, I booked all 3 of us. Got a letter from GPs cancelling DS1's as according to their records he doesn't take his steroid inhaler enough, though 'if that's changed when he has his asthma review he can have a flu jab'. Of course, this will be at a different time from mine & Ds2's (we had ours yesterday), assuming I can get one booked or the practice has some vaccine left. Grr.
  • I have the same problem as Tubzy - radiators bled until started spraying but still no heat. I swear by my thermals from Uniqlo - they wash and last well and don't look too 'thermally' (ie lace bits poking out of the top of your tops). Long johns under jeans. I have got the kids neck warmers as they lose their scarves or try to tie each other up with them. Also have discovered the Japanese haramaki - first one I saw was in Lidl! snug band round your middle - kidney warmer? I find I get a gap there between jeans and tops and this fills them nicely. Have seen them both for sale online and ways of making your own from old tops etc.....
Also we get quite a draft down our (not in use) chimney....is it safe to temporarily block up?
  • Right I've got to fix the window that never closes and wait for my new slippers and hoodies to arrive

this is mine and my boyfriends first winter without people to help us (so we don't really have a clue)

They are brilliant and worth every penny. Uniqlo do them as well (heattech)
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

Our heating went on for the first time last night and like some peeps my rads were cold, hot and cold or just warm in places.

It turned out that there was air in our system and i ran it on high for a while and kept turning it on and off, i even ended up with the hot water on for half an hour trying to force the air around the system.

The idea is that all the air ends up in one rad and then that one can be bled, dont know where it ended up because before i went to bed they were all hot but it took around three and a half hours and i was panicking a bit :o

Ours is an old back boiler and we`ve had a couple of new rads on recently so air got in the system when it was drained. One more rad to go when we`ve decorated and then we will have a full set for the first time in over six years

I`m really loving the new fleece lined curtains in the living room - especially in the bay. I keep marvelling at how little they cost and how nice they look.:D

Planning on starting the GC again soon :p

In that case get on to your builders/developers/site agents asap. In old systems sticking thermostatic valves and sludge in the radiators can be a problem (my own problem) but in a brand new house this should not be a problem - you bought a house with central heating, if it's not working your builders/developers/site agents need to be told that you have a problem - unfortunately you may need to be quite pushy to get them to sort it out, but remember that it's their responsibility.
