We didn't realise how much heat (& noise) they let out/in. Now we have stuffed them with removable folded papertowels and clear sellotaped over them, then rescrewed the covers on. Perfectly draft free and amazingly quiet!

We've installed new windows with trickle vents in them in the new place & when we move in (after the building regs have signed off) the holes get filled in by my trusted window fitter! We'll be living on the side of a mountain & the last thing we need is the whistling of the wind though the windows - it'll be blowing a hooley most of the time anyhow!
  • Thanks for the reminder about the flu jabs and where to get them. I don't get home from work before the surgery shuts. I can get it free through work but only (this year) at a place awkward to get to without a car at a time when I'd be able to go. Will check with my colleagues to see if I could go with one of them before I decide where I'm going to pay to get it done.
  • Hi Tumpty:wave:good to see you over here too!

This is supposed to be good and know a friend who's used it and it's certainly stopped the drafts http://www.draughtex.co.uk/ - you can get a free sample from the website so may be worth a try to see if it'll do the trick.

It's not going to be as cheap as pipe insulation - but I guess it depends on how much you need (would the drafts get through pipe insulation as it's not a solid substance?)
ohh that looks great! thank you! my dad said that you squish the pipe insulation into the gap so it would compress and stop the drafts. I'll have a look for a cheaper alternative to the stuff you linked to as there are lots of gaps in the floor and that would get very costly. Great to know it exists though if my budget version fails.

    Hey everyone :)
Ive spoken to dad today and he seems a bit perkier today :)
Also just been speaking to my nan and she has asked what we wanted for Christmas and knowing she also doesn't have much money i said we didn't want anything but in the end was persuaded that she was going to get us something anyway may as well be something we wanted - so i asked for a book each one that ive been desperate for as its about money saving and one that i think hubby will be chuffed with. I was going to ask for something more practical but what we need i felt was too much on her pension if you know what i mean so at least with books they will help us in the long run and not blowing the budget! Quite excited to get mine now lol.

... just had to tell you what ive achieved so far

Well done, you! It feels really satisfying once you know you no longer have to worry about something. I've finished what I need to do for this evening and I'm now revising my own winter lists for the umpeenth time. I need to stop thinking about it and just get on with it ... story of my life :rotfl:
  • If you have trickle vents on your windows, make sure they're shut! I moved into my flat in the summer and only realised they were open in February, by which time we endured months of poor electric heaters battling the draught!

OK, I'm now confused:o I thought that you shouldn't cover vents in the house as they're there to air the place and stop damp?
