Ohhhh Marilyn, wish my house was that warm - it got down to 11 deg earlier:eek: and had to give in and put the heating on (can't move around to warm up).
Have got several more layers on today so hoping I'll be a bit warmer but it will be going on again if it gets that cold!chirpychick wrote: »My poor Poppy hamster has bronchitis!!!!!! I was devestated today thinking she was going to pop her clogs at the peak of when everything was going bad. I have a huge amount of animals but big or small theyre all my babies. Anyway the vet said bronchitis and she is on antibiotics and i have moved her to the airing cupboard (not hot, its a nice temp) he said she has a 25% chance of survival so fingers crossed extra tlc will do the trick, ive just no idea how she got it!
Ohhhh Chirpy, poor wee mite, keeping everything crossed.....
I have my new open fire (did I mention that?) and my new (well second hand new) real rabbit fur coat (did i mention that?!),

Well, have been up since silly o'clock again (need to get my sleep pattern sorted!)
Anyway, just been outside and have been reminded about one of the things I do love about winter ..... (clear cold nights only;)) -
The stars!:D
It's still pitch black outside and popped out with the dog and the sky is littered with stars - I love them!:)Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)

I followed advice on here for buying thermals and remained lovely and warm all last night despite the chill in the air so managed not to have heating on when I would have normally.0
-
Invested in thermal black out linings (which were a couple of pounds cheaper tha just the thermal ones for some reason??) for the big curtains on the front door (leads into a fully glazed porch which is very chilly), it's all double glazed and the door fits well but with so much glass the coldness was noticeable....the linings have made a huge difference and you really feel the temperature difference when you open the curtains. Brought more for the master bedroom which really do make it feel cosy.
Have a big extension off the kitchen and noticed yesterday morning that the most exposed wall under a huge window was very cold (the curtains there are about 20 years old and only just skim the window sills - i dont think they'd ever been cleaned so I probably shrunk them when I washed them!) I went out looking for some long curtains, found the ones I liked but refused to pay £120 for them (considering I need another 3 pairs of other sizes for the other windows out there too).... Would have cost £400 plus thermal linings (ouch). Spent a good few hours sitting in front of the fire (free wood) last night and managed to find the same curtains with the largest size being only £55!!! That's more like it.....so duely ordered and will be ordering thermal linings for them all today....a lot of expense now but that's always the way when you move into a new house isn't it."Start every day off with a smile and get it over with" - W. Hi everyone what a load of great tips!
I'm a regular over on the Frugal Challenge board and getting ready for winter now.
I need to filll floorboard cracks this year, my dad suggested squishing foam into them cut from strips of pipe insulation, has anyone tried it?
I need to lose 4lb so I can fit my thermals on underneath my trousers so that is my first goal!0 -
Hi Tumpty:wave:good to see you over here too!
This is supposed to be good and know a friend who's used it and it's certainly stopped the drafts http://www.draughtex.co.uk/ - you can get a free sample from the website so may be worth a try to see if it'll do the trick.
It's not going to be as cheap as pipe insulation - but I guess it depends on how much you need (would the drafts get through pipe insulation as it's not a solid substance?)Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)

Big frost in this pat of Norfolk last night and I caved and left the elec. ads on v low. Downstairs as 17 degrees when I got up which is a massive impovement on last year when the fire would die overnight and then of course just leave the gaping hole to the sky whilst the stupid pump (no timer switch on it) circulated cold water - can you tell Im bitte about the heating in this house?
I cant manage to keep it up to that without the help of rads so dont know what else to do to sitting room to insulate it. I have lined heavy-ish curtains up at front door (opens straight into sitting room) and front window but NOT fleece of thermal lining - will this make a substatial difference do you all think??
Plus - with the painted concrete floor - do you think the heat is being leached away throught there??? I only have a small rug whee my feet are when on sofa.debt free 2021 at current DMP rate[/COLOR] (probably be in an old peoples home by then)0 -
I need to buy more tealights & some matches & then i'm pretty much done:DTry to be a rainbow in someone's cloud.0

Morning all.
Well, I caved in this morning and put the heating on for a bit. It was 1 degree outside, not sure about inside.
I had washed all the gloves etc. and put them in a box ready. Since then I've tidied the box up and put it somewhere. Anywhere.
Had very cold paws this morning when out with the dog. I think I'm meeting myself coming back now.0
