Do any of you lovely people have any recommendations of how to keep feet warm. At home I wrap them in a wheat bag but during the day they can get so cold they start to hurt.

i find slipper style booties the best, they cover that important bare ankle bit from where your trousers ride up a bit when you sit down and keep your feet toasty, the fleece lined ones are very warm and have thick soles filled with insulation. when it's really cold i'll wear socks in mine but my feet get so warm in them sometimes i have to take them off for a bit to cool down :T

This might seem a bit strange (and nosy!:D) but I was wondering if any of you change your bedtime and getting up time in the winter? I know many will have constraints on when you have to get up for work, getting children out to school etc. But for those with any leeway do you get up later as it gets bright later or go to bed earlier e.g. to save having the heating on? I've been waking up before it's bright these days and since I don't have work I find myself loath to get up when it's dark and cold - if I leave it an hour I don't have to put on lights and it's not so chilly.

i work from home and home educate so we have a very flexible schedule. last winter we tended to sleep long hours but we've been taking vitamin D for a month now and the effects of less daylight aren't bothering us so much

i've decided this year that businesswise earlier is better than later, we have economy 7 electric so i am working towards getting up earlier and earlier til i'm up around 4am, this will give me 3 hours of cheap electric to cook with and use my computer on. i'll let my daughter sleep til 5am then she can do lessons and be out for her runs (snow/ice permitting) before the kids go to school (i don't let her run during school hours don't want someone treating her like she's a truant kid) she won't be able to do her run after the kids get back from school for much longer with it getting dark earlier

i figure this way we'll always be awake for deliveries (this was a big problem last year sleeping in) and we won't have to deal with the end of the night before the storage heaters kick in cold spell cuz we'll be toasty in bed! i may be encouraged to bake more too as the oven will not be so expensive to run on the cheaper electric overnight :T
  • Just think.... Kool Aid but in liquid form and you add water to it.

It's freezing tonight, so much so thought I'd order my curtains. Think my brain was frozen as those £8 curtains I seen were actually ahem curtain tie backs :rotfl::rotfl:

Thought they were rather cheap :o. When I went into the size I wanted, they ended up being £72! Think I will be trawling charity shops now.

    Hi everyone
Just nipping on before going to bed.
A couple of things i thought id remind you of as ive been thinking of you all today -
    1) Asda's flash sale starts midnight apparently and ends friday - might be worth a look if you are still in need of clothing.
    2) I have low immune system and was advised last year to start taking zinc and vit c tablets as i was ALWAYS ill anyway i took them and didnt get ill at all last year so now i just take them when im starting to get a cold and more often than not it doesnt turn into anything, in fact ive not been ill once this year except for 1 tummy bug, so im stocking up this month and starting to take them again to keep them colds at bay.

My poor Poppy hamster has bronchitis!!!!!! I was devestated today thinking she was going to pop her clogs at the peak of when everything was going bad. I have a huge amount of animals but big or small theyre all my babies. Anyway the vet said bronchitis and she is on antibiotics and i have moved her to the airing cupboard (not hot, its a nice temp) he said she has a 25% chance of survival so fingers crossed extra tlc will do the trick, ive just no idea how she got it!

    its 5 degrees here tonight.

im determined to have our winter prep done by 1st november and even hubby is finally on board with that now :)

opinion: we were going to get a fork and spade from b&q using shop and scan vouchers as hubby broke the fork at the weekend and we are in the middle of digging over the garden ready for turf in the spring. but he said a fork could wait if we needed the vouchers for other things. so im wondering do i *really* need a spade in the car incase of snow?? we dont drive much im a housewife now and he walks to and from work so we only use the car for visiting family so every other weekend. Do you think we should focus on getting our windows replaced first? we live in north hants so although we have had a lot of snow the past 2 years its not like we are in scotland.

    id appreciate your thoughts.

    hope everyone is well.

thank you for all the support! im feeling a bit more positive again now as someone on WLR did me a very nice deed and just reminded me of all the nice things :) also all of you guys have been a great help and support to me the past 6 weeks, its very very much appreciated!! I only hope i can be as supportive to you in return over the coming months.

can you remind me what size primarks all in ones go upto? MIL has offered to get me some for christmas and i know i asked before but i cant find the replies.
Everything is always better after a cup of tea

Can I just say that I LOVE this thread!!!

As an sufferer of SAD, the onset of winter depresses the bejeezus out of me but with the help of this thread, and the planning, this is the first year that I can honestly say "Bring it ON!"

I have my new open fire (did I mention that? :D ) and my new (well second hand new) real rabbit fur coat (did i mention that?!), YakTrax, thermals, leggings, leg warmers, sheepskin slippers, double bubble wrapped back/kitchen door, windscreen panels behind rads (makes a huge difference btw), and a whole heap of lovely food in, as well as extra blankets, a gas hob in case of power cuts... and open fire the same - will have heat even if no power.... Kids toboggans in the shed, Free wood for fire plus foraged wood, found my old (very old) thermals, lovely neighbours who I can depend on for anything I forgot...

    I AM READY!!!!!!!!!!!!

I bet that now we are all prepared, shoveled up, yaktrakked, wellied and buried in dishwasher salt we will get half an inch of snow for two days, it would be just typical!

LOL No way - I seriously believe that we are in for a good dumping of the white stuff this year... I really hope I am proven wrong but I doubt it very much!!!

Now.... where is my passport? :D

Actually that reminds me I must get ahold of some yaktrax type devices - saw some in Sportsdirect for £8-odd IIRC which should be good... May have to give up and get a shovel and salt before we move and take them with us during move... it's only across the city and we're going to be here easily into next month anyway, so might as well.
    On the up :D
    Our wedding day! 13/06/15
  • I'm doing ok with no heating on with all my little changes - its 19 degrees in the sitting room right now while it is frosty outside, so my draught excluders and lined curtains must be doing the trick.

Have to say, today was the first day it felt wintery and was getting a draught from the passage when the door was open.

How's everyone else doing - no one sitting freezing I hope xx

Try wilkinsons, i've got canny sized bay windows and got lined fake suade type ones for only £25.
