  • My Mum spent £5,000 having these fitted and her bills have rocketd. She has not had them on most of the Summer but her bills are coming out at £200 a month. How is this even possible. She has a 2 bedroom aprtment the same as me and my Gas and electric combined is £65 a month with 2 of us living there

Could it be set up incorrectly of using up the most expensive KW each day. doesnt seem like its getting the cheapest. She cahnged supplier from Fischer to Bulb and they are still £200 a month

Massive bills are unavoidable with full price electricity, at around 15p per kilowatt hour it's the most expensive form of heating. (The only exception is a heat pump because you're getting some help by sucking heat out of the air, ground or water.) That's why most people use gas at around 3p/kWh.

Even with proper storage heaters (full size boxes of bricks) on Economy 7 you'll be paying perhaps 10p/kWh so it's more than three times as expensive as gas.

Sadly your Mum is stuck with a very expensive mistake. icon9.gif

I think you just need to read back through the tales of woe and warnings in this thread to realise that Fischer heaters and others of a similar nature (Rointe for instance) which purport to be filled with magic dust, golden clay or other exotic materials are extremely expensive to buy and even more expensive to run.

As Gerry says, your Mum is stuck with them and the associated high running costs unless she can prove that she was mis-sold, mislead or coerced into getting them. Otherwise her only recourse is have them taken out and replaced with another form of heating. As said above any form of electric heating is expensive.

Storage heaters on off-peak supplies are probably the cheapest without going the whole hog and getting a heatpump, the installation of which is expensive but they can be quite cheap to run if the system is designed properly and they used correctly.

    Q. Guess why these radiators are all made to measure instead of being available in a range of standard sizes ?

    A. You can't cancel your order ! icon9.gif
  • Watch out people..Watchdog series 46 episode 6 around 37 minute into the programme on BBC I-player 17/10/2019 watchdog noted that Trustpilot reviews are seriously shaddddy...Trustpilot well known for shady reviews. Trustpilot will take down negative reviews. Beware through out, not just during halloween. Fischer heater reviews on Trustpilot are fake. Fischer heating surveys are a way of getting their foot into your front door. A survey should not take more than 30 minutes. If it does, its to force you to part with your money. These so called German heaters should cost no more than £200. Instead they will try and squeeze around £1500 to £2000. This is not a fixed price. Its what they can get out of you. If the surveyor turned salesperson does not manage to take your cash on the day expect a call later with a further discount. And remember if you do get ...Yes you guessed you have a 14 days to cancel.

Fake witness at sham marriages must be held to account...I am working on it. Waiting for Brexit to expose the fakes:)

I suspect these reviews are much more accurate.

  • I currently have the old 80s style storage heaters as I have no mains gas. What are the modern day alternatives for a good price?
    Thanks

    General rules are:

    - a brick is a brick
    - if it ain't broke don't fix it
    - all 'off gas' LA & HA were "under powered"
    - it's never cost effective to renew for the sake of it
    - it will take too many years to recover your costs
    - as we get older we get colder

    - get the best tariff for your area code
    - get an online account
    - you supply 8 weekly meter readings
    - CAC / 12 = payment plan
    - underpowered-fit an additional heater in living area
    - underpowered-change your 1.7 for 2.2 or 3.4 !

Look if you tell the group what tariff you are on e7/10/18. Why you are looking to 'upgrade' etc. Lots of people here to help. Want more ask.

I'd look for really good insulation so that heat isn't wasted overnight when it's not needed, together with a fan to boost the output in the late afternoon and evening. Some clever temperature controls and a timer would also be useful.

I don't have any experience of them, but Dimplex Quantum looks good. It may be worth paying a bit more than for an ordinary box of bricks because less heat will be wasted so the running costs will be lower.

But as Richie warns, you'll have to do the sums to see whether replacement makes sense for you.
