My mum always made me wear an underskirt, she also tried to make me wear a pantie girdle, telling me all girls need one for support, ermm isn't that what your abdominal muscles do? I drew the line with that one.
I've also remembered being at primary school and doing PE in our knickers and vests, that was in the days boys wore short pants to school :o

I remember mum dressing me in a skirt that was attached to a vest type thing. An all in one skirt if you like. At least it didn't fall down!

I remember them - the skirt was usually a kilt style. I think you were meant to wear a top over the "vest" bit, but I remember in infant school one hot summer, some girls wearing them without a top. I always wanted one but never had one :(:o.

And it looks like we made it once again
Yes it looks like we made it to the end

Mine both stopped wearing them when they came out of the body suit vests. About 12-18 months I recall. Both of mine are winter babies and seem far more warm blooded than my niece and nephew who are summer babies. They have always worn vests but mine didn't. DS started wearing his summer vest tops under his t-shirt a couple of years ago and he was given some vests for christmas when he was 5. He loves these and still wears them now (they are so short!).
For us, living in the warm south west and not really experiencing bad weather, vests weren't really necessary. The last 2 years, we have had really harsh winters and had snow which lay on the ground for a long time. 2 weeks of -10 degree temperatures etc. We all really layered up with as many t-shirts and what have you as we could. DD wears double t-shirts when it's cold.
This year, we will be investing in vests. We have been warned that we are in for another cold hard winter and our bills are projected to double. Gotta save some pennies :)

  • Janepig, im glad someone else remembers the kilt type thing, i started to doubt my memories! I wore mine with a fetching minnie mouse jumper! You werent missing out really!

Kaz2904, this debate has got me thinking i should invest in some vests for myself, Im always moaning im cold!

My 2 are summer babies Kaz, and they are never cold.

We were laughing in the playground today that since I got fat I don't feel the cold, but one of my kids is obese and the other is very underweight, so I don't think it's that either.

I do remember being cold when I was a kid though .... those petticoat kilt things weren't very warm Jane, they skimmed over your waist, so draughts went up your skirt right up to your neck!

Aw bless you OP, you do just what is best. My little boy (4) wears them all the time, even a few days in summer. It's really funny but I have a thing about them, in that he doesnt feel cared for if he is not wearing one, crazy Mummy thing!

I have just today (with a code, very MSE) ordered him some thermals from M&S and more vests.

I sent him to preschool with tights on under his trousers last winter, I don't suppose I can get away with that now he is a bit older! Thermal longjohns are the way forward though x
  • My DD went from wearing vests to crop tops at about 8, then switched to T shirts and long sleeved T shirts at 11. It's one way she maintains a veneer of rebellion, wearing something gothy underneath the uniform. In winter she wears thin polonecks from Uniqlo. It's probably in defiance of every principle of school uniform - they even regulate the colour of hairbands and anything that is too shiny a plain black is a disciplinary matter - but they forgot to specifically forbid particular types of underclothing.

It's normal for small children to have vests and very popular to have pretty, matching undies when you get small girls. It may have changed slightly since Woolworths went, as that was the usual place to get them, but you aren't strange for doing it - most kids will be asking their mums for vests if they see your daughter with them!

  • My son has quite a few of the long-sleeved cotton vests from M & S - and he hasn't remotely kicked up a fuss. If he did, when it gets colder, he'll just have to lump it, his school's pretty chilly!

I wear vests sometimes in the winter, too. Old stone court buildings are pretty nippy in the winter. But I tend to go for the knitted silk ones, rather than the wooly itchy type.

Our schools aren't chilly, and my town isn't particularly cold. My kids wear a coat, gloves, even a scarf outside in the winter but indoors it's just not necessary. Some kids seem to feel cold though, I think mine was pretty much the only one without a jumper this week.

They do get cold feet outside though, I'm going to look for wellies with socks this year. Lidl are selling some, and they even have a layer of aluminium (I think?) in the sole which sounds fab.

Loads of kids when I was at school (primary and secondary) wore either plain vests or t-shirts under school uniform - I was the odd one out for not a lot of the time!

I was a warm child who didn't like being too warm, I'd rather be chilly with goosebumps than even "snug" warmness. Nothing's changed :D
