It is wonderful, even my OH said it's made a difference that I'm not so angry and moody :o

Didnt suprise me when i saw it on the news this morning - as a first time mother there is bound to be an increased risk. Its something you have never done before, 2nd time round home births have already "proven" they can have a sucessful low risk birth.

What also didnt suprise me was the intervention rates at doctor led units - I have no choice in my area, its a doc led unit or home birth. I intend to keep the !!!!!!s as far away from me as possible. I want as natural a birth as i can have in a hospital setting.

  • 38w midwife appt done today, all normal as ever and she's in prime evacuation position. Have made next appt for due date, she mentioned she might do a stretch and sweep, they don't do it as standard at that stage but could have it if I want.

Birth doesn't really bother me too much, yes I've been through it before, but I think I could just get on with it by myself (obv except midwife!) and just call everyone when it's over. I don't really mind the stay in hospital afterwards either, it's nice to be able to get used to the idea of everything with a bit of help on tap before you're let loose at home.

hey lovelies just thought i'd pop in whilst baby is giving me 5 minutes quiet time.

We have named our little man but it's really unusual and am a bit worried that someone might recognise me, me paranoid, as if lol, but we tend to call him Roo most of the time anyway bless him.

I hope you're all ok, I'm sorry I haven't had time to read back. I'm not going to post a birth story, it was all very straight firward and quick, but did end up with a second degree tear, this hurt afterwards more than the birth to be honest. My advice to anyone would be to do perinium massage, god i wish i had! In case you do tear stock up on paracetamol, arnica, lavender oil and t-tree oil, the oils were recommended by the midwife, she said put a few drops in a glass of milk then put that in the bath, it really helped. Standing for more than a few minutes really makes your bits ache, so beware, make sure you have a seat near by.

i was trying to think up advice or a list of things i wish i had been told or that i thought might help anyone.

definitely stock up on the oils, paracetamol etc.
i really wish i'd done more batch cooking, cooking in the first week has been a nightmare, trying to cook and eat food inbetween feeds is not easy.
lanisoh nipple cream i found really good.
tesco slim line and large maternity pads i found really good.
tesco breast pads, i found rubbish, only one sticky bit, which doesn't really stay stuck.
definitely invest in a couple of dark towels, i didn't use them in the hospital, but definitely need them for home
in the first week we went through 2 packs of huggies size 1 27 pack nappies and 2 packs of baby wipes

just had to stop ttyping to change a stinky nappy and my lovely son decided to do a massive wee all over me!! Trouble is he also wees all over himself and he hates having his clothes changed! Que screaming baby!! he's calmed down now and gone to sleep, but am typing one handed with my left hand, so it's taking ages lol.

stock up on a bottle of infacol, as poor roo can't bring his wind up so have had a couple of evenings/nights of constant crying with no soothing him, que a midnight run to tesco to get some!! It has really helped him bring up his wind.

hmmmm what else... oh the crib, i am so so glad i got a crib rather than have the moses basket upstairs, as the crib is beside the bed and we keep the hall way light on so that i can see his face in case hes been sick, he makes lots of sicky burpy noises and i think he feels more secure that he can see me too, which he wouldn't in a moses basket.

as little lun is sick a lot in the night we end up changing the bedding every day so had to buy more sheets and blankets, matalan ones i like.

Roo also likes being swaddled at night, i found out how on youtube and found a matalan cellular blanket works really well, although he likes having one of his arms out so he can suck his fist.

oh just for info, it took ten days for his belly button to come off and my goodness it stunk, but apparantly it's normal!!! Oh and BF babies poos look like chicken korma lol.

the best bit of advice i was given by the midwife was to calm baby down by skin to skin contact, this works better with OH as baby can smell my milk, but strip baby down to his nappy and OH takes his top off and have a cuddle, within a few minutes all is calm :)

i take a flask of tea and some nice biccies to bed with me, makes the night time feeds much more tolerable.

oh and i lovingly washed and ironed all of the baby's clothes before he came along, but did all the poppers up, a real pain in the bum when you're trying to quickly dress a screaming baby! So as nice as they look all folded, don't bother doing them up when you put them away.

Sorry for the epic post, I am by noooooo means an expert on baby stuff, but thought these things might help someone. The first ten days have really been a panicy, v tiring, hormonal time, but now, i feel really good about it all, and we're getting there slowly :)

on another note, all of those worrying about how much weight they've put on, I put on 2 stone ish at 5 ft 2, and it has only taken me ten days to lose it, and eventhough my stomach is still rather jelly like, it's almost flat :) and that's with not even trying, breastfeeding really does make the weight fall off!!!!

Right that is definitely enough from me.

    much love

    Sounds like you're loving it :) x
Re the sick on sheets thing.Grab a muslin, fold it lengthways like a scarf then wrap it round the moses basket/crib mattress just where babys head lies. Then when they get sick you can just change the muslin rather than the whole bottom sheet xx

  • Hi Missy, I'm new on this thread (18+2) just wondered which oil you are supposed to use for the perinium massage and when you should start doing it please?

Have read all of your advice and taken it in, especially the batch cooking, definately sounds like a good idea!! is this your first? How are you finding breast feeding? I am hoping to be able to breast feed but also dont want my OH to feel left out.

    Enjoy your little man x
