SFW - Ideally we would've got everything like you, but given the move back from Aus and only just getting in our own place, we've had to put our baby list on the backburner a little bit.

Annabella - I know, I think we have to take it now tbh. OH reckons we should've told them we'd "just this weekend ordered one". And who knows maybe bubs will love it. But it's just a bit old, a bit big, a bit tatty and not what we want, so I know I'll be loathed to even put him/her in it in the first place! Seems a waste to have it hidden in the spare/storage room, especially when stepmum has paid for it. And I know she earns really very little and we can more than afford to buy everything ourselves :(

A friend of ours was due exactly a month before me (ie 11 November), but had her baby yesterday, 3 weeks early (5lbs 12oz boy)! Eeeeeek! It's all getting scarily close. I'm starting to wonder whether stopping work at 37+3 is leaving it a bit close!! Granted I work from home so it's pretty easy, but I'm so over it all (work that is) and starting to panic about popping early!

On my last day at work I will be 39+6!! I'm due on the 10th February and my last day at work is the 9th February! Luckily my work is very supportive and if I need to finish earlier for whatever reason I can. A lady I work closely with did the same as me, worked until the day before her due date and gave birth the very next day on her actual due date - I would be happy if I could have have the same!

I have a pain on my bump - Not lower (which i find odd) its right at the top - not a sharp pain, its constant - any ideas?! MW not answering her phone

I have pain in my bump at the top, usually just under my ribs and when ive been sitting in the car or on the sofa. MW wasnt at all concerned and said its just my ribs digging into the top of my womb now its so much higher. If i change positions then it gradually fades away.

My mat leave officially starts the day before my EDD, but I'm taking annual leave before that. Debating whether to move my mat leave start date to 1 Dec and use my 11.5 days holiday before that to finish up sooner (ie 15th Nov rather than 24th).

The main driver for this is that there are 3 of us doing the same job. One girl has resigned so we're down to 2 of us from next Monday. We could muddle through - but - the other one has just gone off sick for 2 weeks, so I'm the only left next week!

Plus there is no sign for a replacement for the girl who's leaving or my maternity cover, and I'd really hoped to be winding down by now rather than taking on more at 33 weeks! So although it would leave my team in the !!!!, this past week I've really started to feel the difference physically and emotionally, and I'm sick of my horrid boss and also just want to nest and go swimming and shopping and lie on the sofa relishing every moment my baby kicks :) rather than bloody working.

I haven't been weighed since my booking in appointment...

My mat leave also 'officially' starts on my due date, I've got three weeks holiday left to take which I'm using beforehand. So my last day at work is the 30th December, then three weeks holiday, then mat leave starts on the 22nd, unless I pop early of course...

I'd love to be able to finish work now though. The person who's covering my maternity has already technically taken over my role, and I'm just doing projecty bits and bobs so I am finding it really hard to plan my days, as some days I have quite a bit to do, other days I have nothing (and end up on here a lot when no-one's looking!) and I think I'm going to struggle to fill my days over the next ten weeks...

So I agree, Blue Monkey, I'd much rather be swimming, and nesting, and sofa-lazing!

I've just had a conversation with my Mum about child care and she has offered to have my baby when I go back to work - what do you ladies think? I won't be going back full time, just 3 days a week and the original plan was Mum having baby 1 day and baby going to a CM 2 days a week. I had thought about Mum having baby the full 3 days but didn't want to ask her and put her in an awkward position!

She is still young and active (she is 51) and she doesn't work as my Dad has a very good job so basically she is a lady of leisure!! I'm 1 of 5 children and I know she loves babies and children and misses having them around. The one thing I will insist on is paying her, she refused to listen when I said this, but I would have to give her something and I know hubby will want to as well!

What is a reasonable amount to suggest to her, I know she won't take much off me, it will be hard work to give her anything at all!

I'm so greatful to her as finding child care was a big worry of mine and knowing my Mum has baby will put my mind at ease.

janniew i've only been weighed at my 12 week scan and have a low BMI as well. I havn't been weighed since. They have only measured bump and when i was measuring small at my 28 weeks thy referred me for a scan but they didn't seem concerned because they said to me that as i'm small baby is prob just small. Everytime i see a different midwife and they measure me, they always say 'wow you got a tiny bump'!

My mum has also offered to look after baby so our plan at the moment is for me to return to work 3days a week. Mum has baby one day and childminder for two days. I will offer mum money but not sure if she will take it so will just give her money if shes planning on taking baby on a day out.

I think nesting is kicking in. Today i have made a chocolate cake, cleaned the kitchen and hoovered everywhere.
Now going to look on the internet for things for the baby.
My babies r us order should be coming on Thursday can't wait so my ocd is going mad everytime i go in babys room!
  • Hi Jannine,

I'm in a similar situation - planning on going back 3 days a week, with the baby in nursery 2 days and then perhaps with a grandma the other day. My parents are divorced, so there's my mum, MIL and my stepmum. My mum is a bit older than yours (61) but is so overexcited about this baby its untrue and I think is half-expecting to be asked to help out. The only thing is, she can be quite overbearing and controlling and we've had a few rows about her not agreeing with my boundaries and overstepping them, so I'm totally not sure about the whole thing. Might be just as well (for us anyway) to have her as grandma, not as childcare.

Perhaps rotating the grandmas would work for us, so they would actually only have the baby 1 full day every 3rd week (but stepmum and MIL still work full time, so not sure how practical this is).

If it was the same grandma each week, then I too would want to pay them. Firstly because I think they would be engaged as childcare, not just nanny babysitting for a couple of hours, and secondly, because I think it would keep me in control of the situation (knowing how my mum can be). I've no idea on rates though to be honest...

I started a thread on this a while back - some interesting food for thought on there: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3204328

I'd be interested to here what you decide in the end!

I too have a similar situation, I'm intending to go back 2 days a week and MIL has offered to have the baby,OH mentioned about payin her, she is retired at 62, which would be good but im on minimum wage so wouldn't be worth me working, and OH suggested her coming here to do it, but she'd hve to leave her house at 0715 in the morning to get here, and i dont really want her innmy house all day..... i sound horrid i know, she is lovely, but then theres petrol money etc......and i know im going to be very particular about how i bring up baby, its so difficult!!
