I don't want an iPhone. Am I normal?

Most of my friends have got iPhones these days and so I'm thinking I ought to get one. But I just can't really bring myself to take the plunge. It seems to me that in favour of getting one:

1. They let you access the Internet while on the move.
2. They come with a streetmap so you don't need to carry a paper one.
3 They would enable me to do a few more matched betting offers than I do currently.
4. I could reply to text messages much more easily than with a basic phone.

Against it:

1. They're expensive.
2. You've really got to look after them. I bought my last mobile phone for £10 a year ago. I cracked the cover six months ago, and lost it a few days ago. I like being able to disrespect my mobile and wouldn't be able to do so if it cost £500. I know you can insure them but I would probably face high premiums after I lost the first one.
3. Do I really need the Internet on the move? If I'm with friends it would be rude to be browsing the Internet instead of talking to them. I have very little dead time on my own because I very seldom use public transport so there's no sitting on or queuing for the bus. I don't think they work on the Tube anyway do they? I did want to use the Internet in Norfolk the other day, so I borrowed an iPhone, but there was no reception, so that was pretty hopeless. Plus I've got a laptop I can take with me if I really need access away from home.

So I'm inclined to give them a miss. Or do you think that if I get one I'll start wondering how I ever lived without it?

    Relax, you are normal.
However, all the features you are talking about are not iPhone-specific. For MB you can get a much cheaper android. It will do everything except the most recent RP football offers.

get a cheap android phone - it does all the pro's you list, but is a quarter of the price and cheaper to insure if you choose to go high end.

iPhone is 98% marketing....there's cheaper, better products out there

OK, smartphone I suppose. Although I think some of the matched betting offers are iPhone specific.

I bought an Ipod Touch 4G 32GB instead.

I don't have to worry about data charges with my Touch!!! (with the iPhone paltry data allowance plans you get these days I bet you can so easily rack up £££ if you go over) Stories of huge roaming charges and if you make a mistake and download / update content over the mobile network you've had it!!!

If money was no object I'd buy one and sood the bills!!

No, you are not normal, everyone and his dog must have one.
However if you get another phone for a tenner or less, you would be sensible (and richer).

The way iphones are going reminds me of that Dr Who episode where everyone what had a bluetooth headset got taken over by aliens.

Come the invasion you, and I, Op will be safe!
Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree! :D

Yes, you're right, it does feel like all the marketing is telling me I must have one.

Completely. It's just another over rated, over priced Apple product for sheep to waste their money on

Am I right in thinking that most phones including android phones use regular sim cards, while iPhones use "Microsims"? It would save a bit of hassle if I get a phone that uses a normal sim card.

Only iPhones 4 use micro sim ATM, but this is not a problem as normal sims can be cut and there are adapters for micro sims.
