I have such a poor memory.

I think this thread is so funny!
My sons memory for appointments is so bad that he brings the letters down to me to put on MY calendar! His partner is just as bad! though he has a couple of times come down and forgotten to bring the letter! he is only in his 20s!
I really dont get why people get so po-faced about Alzhiemers - when you are caring for a person who is suffering the illness, you REALLY need to keep hold of your sense of humour!
Otherwise every day is just 24 hours of misery. a giggle or a belly laugh does so much to relieve stress!0 -

Apparently it is like a filing system - you register a memory and then file it away in a 'filing cabinet' in your brain
If you return to this memory quite often then you will always know where it is kept and can return to it straight away
If you rarely re-visit this memory you find it harder to find and it can be lost in the filing cabinet somewhere - its still there but you don't know where it is kept so the mind doesn't return to it
Lots of people think this is what dreaming is, it is your mind 'sorting through' the memories and filing them away for future use
Well my filing system is broken.
I completely forgot the MOT on the car was out.
It's not even as if I remembered about it and forgot to do it....I just had no memory of it needing done at all.
I had to drive a 300 mile round trip for son's hospital appointment today and was panicking because we were running late. I got caught speeding on the dual carriageway by the camera van.
When I came home, that's when I found out about the MOT.
No doubt they will electronically check everything and I'll be spending Christmas in jail. My own fault, I know.
I also paid the wrong credit card and sent the payment to a card that doesn't even carry a balance.Herman - MP for all!

This thread is great, I don't feel quite so bad now.
Today at work one of the lads came into the office to ask me for teabags and a bag of sugar, I got up from my desk, walked 5 steps to the cupboard and had to ask him again what he wanted cause I couldn't remember :eek:Don't wait for your ship to come in, swim out to it.0 -
I had a similar experience I had an appointment for September couldn't recall the consultant's name, rang the hospital last Thursday to find it was on Friday when I was already 250 miles away for work, fortunately a private app so changed to tomorrow with little fuss, I am usually good with appointments I blame the work calendar it eats appointments LOL.0

Oh aj, I'm so sorry about that, it's horrid, isn't it? Put a reminder on your phone for next year ...
My sis had a panic after the bad weather: she went to insure the car online and found MOT had run out, trouble was she'd lent the car to one of her children who was heading 'oop north' when she realised - they'd had an appointment but cancelled it a couple of times because they were snowbound and she'd never thought to re-book (and neither had the garage!)
Child had to turn around and head back!
It's one of the few things you don't get reminders about - it's a shame, and it clearly could be done now MOTs are computerised.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Thats stress aliasojo!
also too much to do and not enough time to do it!
Calm down hun - deep breaths - you cannot sort it out tonight so in the morning you will ...........do what has to be done.
you WONT worry about the speeding fine - you havent had one!
you will sort out the mispayment to the wrong account - by sending it from there to the right one!
Dont ever worry and panic about being late for hospital appointments - ever had one where you went in on time? and if you are late then complain bitterly about the parking! if you were late someone was early and usually they just slot you in next!
worry and panic CAUSES mishaps! if you are late you are late! the worst thing that can happen is that you have to reschedule. but the really worst thing is that by speeding and panicking you have an accident!
better late than never arrive!0 -
Meritaten, I'm not po-faced about Alzheimers, we do laugh about some of the things my mum says (in the 'if I didn't laugh, I'd cry' sense), but I felt equating it with bad memory was inappropriate and inaccurate. OP has put that right and I appreciate the gesture.
What is it with people getting names wrong? My mum has always called me by my sister's name, and my sister calls me by my niece's name!0 -

I tell all that to my 22 year old all the time. Ironic really.
Today's app was a biggie and it was difficult to co-ordinate, not so easy to reschedule this one. Still no excuse I know, just explaining state of mind.

Don't worry too much, I got caught for having no MOT once, It was out by a few days I had forgotten too - I got a £30 fine, no points or anything
My car was not unroadworthy though (not saying yours is!)
The memory thing - i expect you have too much to remember, thats why your filing system has gone a bit wrong
You have to 'register' a memory before it can be filed away - If there is too much going on some things won't have been registered, so not filed properly, so your mind can't recall the info

You got that soooo right!
Our MOT is out by 3 months.
It was apparently due when we were trying to find a place to stay. Never even entered my head.
