I'll tell you what is handy- being blind in one eye! No-one, not even my mother, can ever remember accurately which eye it is. It has been known to be used as a nice excuse when I don't want to talk to someone I'm passing on the street- 'Oh I'm so sorry. You must have been on my blind side.'

While I've no problem with it at all- it's a fact, I'm blind in one, the other is under threat- there's no point in crying over it. It's the way it is, and some people have far worse. I have sat grinning inside before, while managers have fumbled and stumbled with words trying to explain they need to do a specific risk assessment on me- all without mentioning disability, blindness, your condition, etc.....

That said, it's bit me back- I have forgotten myself I'm blind on that side, and have been left with bruises because I've misjudged the width of a doorframe. I have walked into signposts (and scuttled away quickly).

The one that keeps DH laughing though was the time I woke up, and couldn't see a thing- and promptly panicked.

I'd been sleeping with my good eye pressed into the pillow.....

I have a diary which I have to write every detail in, appointments, things I need to remember to do etc, school clubs, everything really

Else I just wouldn't remember what I am doing - If I lost it I would be boogered!

OMG! Aliasojo how many times did you have to change your titles so it didn't offend anybody!!! Rhetorical question - I don't need an answer!

I'm in the same position as you: similar age - history of Alzeimer in the family - poor memory - couldn't survive without my diary and my routine. If something is out of my routine, I have to write it down and put a reminder in my phone. I worry when my dd says "do you remember...." and I can't when she can so clearly, but then I remember her dad having very strong childhood memories, when me, it was like I'd block everything lol!

I think you are stressed, have a lot on your plate and some memory loss is inevitable. I sometimes think that my brain has only got a certain capacity and in order to put new things in it, I have to forget others. They say learning a foreign language is good so pick your French again girl!

We have been learning about the memory in class at uni

Apparently it is like a filing system - you register a memory and then file it away in a 'filing cabinet' in your brain

If you return to this memory quite often then you will always know where it is kept and can return to it straight away

If you rarely re-visit this memory you find it harder to find and it can be lost in the filing cabinet somewhere - its still there but you don't know where it is kept so the mind doesn't return to it

Lots of people think this is what dreaming is, it is your mind 'sorting through' the memories and filing them away for future use

  • Just to say - my husband has severe dementia - did not occur to me to be offended! Sense of humour has seen me through many things - even down in the worst depths, unimaginable to anyone who has not had to cope with it.

So, no worries - we're all scatty at times!
