Thanks everyone, I had thought about Rogan being associated with curry so ill definitely take that one off the list! Might just have to wait and see what he looks like and hope that helps us decide!

I think that's the best way. I wouldn't name a pet before seeing it - I could call it speedy and find out it's the biggest couch potato in history - or call it Fifi to find out that it looks and acts more like a Spike.

When you see your little one for the first time, you might decide that one of these names is perfect, but you could think that all of them are rubbish and come up with something else. Or spend 5 weeks trying to think of one.

My DD1 was Tabitha all the way through my pregnancy, much to the horror of the family. When she was born, she wasn't a Tabitha. It didn't suit her at all. She had a completely different name before I had left the recovery room.

Congratulations on your impending arrival, though, whatever name they may eventually receive!

I just wanted to say, it's not very nice of people to be saying either of those names are "hideous", or "ghastly". There's no need to be so judgemental. You wouldn't say that to a future mother to her face, would you, if you didn't know her (unless you're just a rude person)? Obviously those names were put to the test here because she and/or her husband liked them, so why be so harsh?
A simple "I don't like such and such, I much prefer such and such" would be just fine.

Anyway, personnally, I like Ethan best.

I think waiting to see what the baby looks like before calling it such, may only work if you are the person who thinks along those lines. I have never seen any baby including my own and thought he doesn't look like a 'Robert' he looks like a 'Thomas', cos in my mind I have no set idea of what 'Robert' or 'Thomas' look like. My friend named her son Matthew cos he didn't look like a Joseph. I have absolutely no idea what she's on about. He's now 14 and I'd still have no problem calling him Joseph if she'd named him such and wouldn't think it didn't suit him.

Is it your 1st baby? If no how do the names go with other siblings? eg you might want to dismiss Ethan if you already have a Nathan.

I think you have to imagine your child when they are 40 introducing themselves to someone and see how it sounds. I think some names can be cute-ish when they are for a baby, or a 4 year old but sound silly on an adult.

If you like the sound of it but not the curriness, how about Rohan for a proper non-made up name?

I'm with gingin. Some names are lovely on babies, but as they grow into teenagers, the name just sounds silly. Older still, often sillier still. Imagine if you met someone with your surname and the above first names - but they are middle aged. Would it sound ok, or would you think that the name was odd for their age?

I also echo those posters who said you should think about initials. Try the first name and last name initials together, as well as any middle names. Do they spell anything that you don't like? Or is it an abbreviation for something?

You might also want to look at what the names mean. My three children have traditional names - not ones which are in very common use, but not so unusual that they sound old fashioned or odd either. I looked at the meanings before deciding as well - I didn't want a horrible meaning.

From the above, I voted for Ethan, but I'm not keen on any of the names TBH.

I agree, my daughter was going to be called Jessica but when she was born she just didn't look like a Jessica, it just didn't feel right once I saw her.

Wait till baby is here and something may just settle the decision one way or another.

    Ethan for me btw. :)

OH didn't know we were having a girl so he kept coming up with boy name suggestions, his favourite for a boy was Aaron.
Herman - MP for all! :)

I like Ethan the best out of those names. The best advice I got given - and I keep saying it lol - is imagine your child's name on his CV. People have preconceived ideas of what a person named such and such is going to be like.

Names are hard though. Our 3rd boy is due in less than 8 weeks now and we still have no idea what to call him!
Thank you to everyone for sharing competitions!
  • Def prefer Ethan out of all the options, I was convinced we were having a boy, esp as we asked the sonographer not to tell us the gender, and she then said 'he' a couple of times, so had Ethan,Thomas and Joshua picked out as possible boy's name options, but when baby appeared, she was a girl, so we quickly decided on Lauren Emily, after my best friend Laura, and my great grandmother Emily.
    :j baby lauren born 06/01/2011 + got married 02/07/2011 :j
