I found those other bits in the msconfig and when I unticked them this is the message that comes up.
you have used the system config utility to make changes to the way windows start.
The SCU is currently in diagnostic or selective start up mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run every time windows starts.
Choose the normal start up mode on the general tab to start windows normally and undo the changes you made using SCU.
you then get a box that can be ticked saying: don't show this message on launch the SCU when windows starts.
I went back to how it was again till I hear back from you.
Thank youThanks for any help and advice given

not making much progress.
uninstall any google related programs in control panel
start, run, services.msc
find the google services and disable them
follow this
http://www.ceveni.com/2008/11/how-to-disable-annoying-googleupdateexe.html
if you don't need the tom tom service either disable this or uninstall it - could you answer whether you need it or not so I don't repeat myself?
disable these using msconfig, and tick the box to ignore after reboot if it appears

uninstall any google related programs in control panel
These are coming up as not started now so all done
if you don't need the tom tom service either disable this or uninstall it - could you answer whether you need it or not so I don't repeat myself?
I only use this every so often to update the maps on my tom tom, sorry did not mean to not reply about this
disable these using msconfig, and tick the box to ignore after reboot if it appears
done all them in there and when restarting I clicked the box to ignore.
Everything is loading a lot quicker for me now and other half has looked at his youtube and it's all ok tonight, so we are fine with that now as well.
Thank you so much for your time and patience I really do appreciate it. The way you have taken the the time to talk me through this was really helpful. Thanks for any help and advice given

If you need to run any of the o4's create a link to the exe's, eg to check ink status, this is the exe
C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqtra08.exe
might be a good time to backup?
do you know what brand your internal hard disk is? can be found in device manager -
this should (might) work with your external wd drive and let you do a disk image backup, and if you create a boot cd from it, will allow you to rescue a completely dead system if anything goes wrong in future
http://support.wdc.com/product/downloaddetail.asp?swid=119!!

Just to say I find Spybot 'tools' useful for controlling things which run at start up - got it pared down to a minimum now.0
