Want to save time at home and allow the food to cook while I am out for the day. Are there any good web sites, threads in Mse or books you could recommend?

I know this may sound silly; but can you just put a whole chicken in it to cook without cutting it up?

"How do you cook a whole chicken in a slow cooker? |My slow cooker instructions says that you need to cover all food with water/stock. Do you just add the whole chicken on its own with no water??? Also read that some people put down carrots on the base to rest the chicken.

    Step my step help please.

How long do you cook it for? What temperature setting - High, Medium, Low? How much water do you add if any?

    thanks MSErs

Just bung it in, fling in an onion, bit of herby stuff, and a stuff a lemon or orange inside as this helps keep it all good and moist. Just make sure you give it plenty of time and check it properly before eating.

Slow cookers do chicken really really well. Falling of the bones, tender meat type stuff.

Also highly recommend for very cheap joints of beef & gammon/ham joints.

I'm cooking a chicken in the slow cooker today and have a few questions. Please bare with me, i'm keen but clueless :rotfl:

*How long would you suggest I cook a whole chicken in the slow cooker for?

    *Would breast down be best?

*How do I make chicken stock when chicken is cooked?

*Would the chicken stock be OK to use in broth tomorrow, normally use a veg stock cube but seems a shame to waste stock?

    Thanks :)

stock is dead easy - stick the carcuss in a big pan, cover it with water and simmer for a few hours. Strain it, and it freezes really well. Use it for soup, broth, risotto - whatever.

*How long would you suggest I cook a whole chicken in the slow cooker for? For a slow-cooker I'm not sure but an awful lot longer than roasting or simmering as the temp is quite a bit lower.

*Would breast down be best? Yes, I'd put the bird in breast down to keep it moist.

*How do I make chicken stock when chicken is cooked? If you've added any moisture to the slow-cooker you should get a fair few juices any way, so I'd add some water to it and once finished you should have some tasty stock to make gravy from, but once you've carved the bird, strip any meat from the carcass, cover the bones in some water and make new stock from that. You can freeze the stock in an ice-cube tray for use later.

*Would the chicken stock be OK to use in broth tomorrow, normally use a veg stock cube but seems a shame to waste stock? Never waste stock! If you choose not to freeze it you can keep it in the fridge for days and days, just remember to simmer it so it's piping hot when you do choose to use it. I can just imagine a lovely chicken pie made with the leftover meat, veggies and stock made into gravy. Yummy!

    Thanks :)

I envy you as I don't have a slow-cooker. I think I might have to have a snoop on ebay once these postal strikes are over with.
  • Take a look at this thread on Chicken in the SC. I'll merge this to it later, to keep ideas together ;)

Try Freecycle - they often have them. That's where I got mine, and I'm glad I did as I hardly ever use it :D
