I am going to try this tonight for a early Sunday lunch tomorrow. Got a nice looking chicken today, I have never done poultry in the slow cooker before, lets hope it works out ok.
I think I will try and remove the chicken skin prior to cooking, no one like its in our house anyway:exclamati0 -
I'm going to try for the first time too. I've put a few leaves of fresh sage, half a lemon and a couple of garlic cloves in the cavity, sprinked with paprika and thrown in a glass of white wine for good measure.
I'll definitely remove the skin too, as my family only likes it crispy and I'm not transferring to the oven as that defeats the object.somewhere between Heaven and Woolworth's0 -
Hey, good luck guys. I'm sure it will be lovely. I tried this on Friday and it was simply delicious!0

Well last night, I fully skinned my chicken, was quite impressed with my butcher skills:D
Popped it in the slow cooker just before going to bed and awoke to a lovely roast chicken smell.
It was simply delicious. Served with some lovely veg, potatoes and Yorkshire puddings and a nice chicken gravy.
The only thing that surprised me was the amount of fat the chicken released. Considering I removed 99% of the skin, and put it in the slow cooker without any liquid, there was a good amount of fat.
It was a corn fed chick so maybe this was the reason. Either way it was the softest, moistest chicken I have had in a while, and I like to think I cook meat and poultry well!
I will certainly be doing it again :T0 -
Ours was lovely too and very easy to skin after cooking. I'll definitely cook it this way again as it was so easy and non-messy, though I need one of those jugs to separate the fat from the stock to make gravy.somewhere between Heaven and Woolworth's0

I have a slow cooker , had it as a present ive never used it . Its huge! i cant find the instructions its a morphy richards one im confused with it really ....its like metal with a giant ceramic black pot. If i wanted to cook a chicken would i be right in thinking just to put the chilled chicken in the crock pot and put water in the metal part then let the black ceramic pot float on the water turn it on for 7 hours on low??
cheers Pd xxx0 -
Hi Pd,
You never put water or any liquid in the metal part. Everything happens in the blacl ceramic pot. The metal part holds the electrical elements that do the stuff! So in the case of cooking a chicken simply put any veg you want to cook along with the chicken (breast side down) in the black pot, switch it on low and leave it!. No need to add any water at all.0 -
Hi
Ive got a whole chicken in the freezer that I want to cook in my slow cooker. Im planning on taking it out tonight to defrost it and pop it in first thing tomorrow morning but I dont want to Just put the chicken in on it's own that seems boring.
I was thinking of putting some veggies in with it and have read on here somewhere that you put the veg at the bottom and the meat on top, is this right??
Ive got new potatoes, carrots , leeks and stocks, herbs, garlic cloves etc.....
How much stock would I put in?
My slow cooker has low, high and auto settings, so what setting should I use and for how long?
Can someone advise please?
Thanks in advance............Quit Day - 8th July 2009.0
