  • I've put a 1.5kg chicken in the slow cooker, with about an inch of water in the bottom and some cloves of garlic, set on medium.

How long should it take to cook? I've never done one before:confused:

    Thank you

Also was the water a mistake?

I'll add this to the existing thread on SC whole chicken to keep ideas together :D

Anyone know a spell to quicken the boiling of potatoes?

    Cut them in half.
  • It turned out delish and the meat just fell of the bone so it wasn't so bad picking it. Also there was LOADS of meat, enough for dinner tonight for me, a roast tomorrow for me and OH and still a got 11oz to stretch into 2 more meals :D

  • QoNMW, glad you enjoyed it - a chicken goes far further when you do it in the SC doesn't it? You can use every little scrap of meat and there's barely any waste.
Your 100 days challenge - does it refer to buying or using? (sorry, couldn't resist!!)
I like cooking with wine......sometimes I even put it in the food!

lol! The idea of being a free agent and not having to use any of those things for 100 days is so attractive, sadly though society has restrictions ;)

  • I was hoping someone could give me some advice...

I have a 3 in 1 slow cooker ( it's a rice cooker, steamer and slow cooker ) but for slow cooking it doesn't have different settings, just basically "on or off" and different time lengths. I have used it a few times for things like casseroles which have always turned out lovely but after reading this thread would like to try cooking a chicken in it. The only thing is I'm not sure whether I could, as like I said it doesn't have different temperature settings. What do you think? Could I cook one and if so how long would I need to cook it for?

    Thanks :)

I would rub some butter onto the skin, and put a sprinkling of paprika for some colour, brown it in a frying pan for about 5 mins. Then, put it in the slow cooker on low - easy peasy but tastes delicious!

Thanks, do you put any water in the slow cooker?
  • I just put mine straight in the slow cooker. Sometimes I put some lemon or garlic in it other times nothing at all. You don't need to put any liquid in. It will come out with at least an inch of liquid at the bottom, in my opinion it is the best way to cook a chicken!
