whole chicken in the slow cooker

Good Morning :hello:
When I do a chicken in the slow cooker, I always add a bit of water - maybe 1/2 inch - 1 inch in the bottom, I guess? I do it by eye. There'll be a lot of liquid comes out of your chicken, so you won't need much, but I would certainly add a bit to get it going
Also, well done with your lunch challenge - 66p is great!
I used to work with a girl who would spend around £15 a day in lunches  I'd have a heart attack if I'd had to spend that a weekThing is, she constantly wondered why she was in debt, and couldn't afford anything

I think you need to put some fluid in i.e. water, white wine, stock etc
When i did it i browned the chicken off first in a frying pan and then threw a can of chopped tomatoes, a chopped onion, cloves of garlic, oxo cube, white wine in so it was about one and a half two inches deep in 'stuff' then thickened the sauce at the end of cooking.....turned out really well (much to my surprise!!):T :rotfl: Ha Ha ... I did it.... What can i put ???:rolleyes:0 -
Thanks for that Freyasmum and suebesue
I'll take your advice I think and put some fluid in.
Freyasmum the lunch log challenge was 66 p per day back in March. I've only recently got back on the wagon, fell back into my £4.20 per day nonsense. £15 a day:eek: I can't think of ANYONE who could spend that on one lunch time, unless they're eating out in fancy-shmancy.

No fancy restaurants or anything, we worked (in a gym) next door to an Asda so we shopped there! She used to buy sushi, amongst other things, eat a bit... and... throw the rest out
I digress... have a nice day at work :wave:0 -
Well, just got back and my house smells like my mum's been in and made the tea. She hasn't!! I still have the potatoes to do BUT the chicken smells and looks divine.
Question number 2 if you'll indulge me. What on Earth do I do with all that lovely juice? I've garlic floating about in it and it's quite thick. Is it all fat? I'd quite like to make a chicken casserole with dumplings with the leftovers. Will it be OK to skim the stock and use the non fatty stuff do you think?Grocery Challenge M: £450/£425.08 A: £400/£.May -£400/£361 June £380/£230 (pages 18 & 27 explain)0 -

Well done  You can use the juices to make gravy (after you're skimmed off any fat). You'll possibly want to dilute it down a bit - have a taste and see. When I'm serving up, I pinch all the garlic cloves and mash them into my potatoes. They have a soft garlicky flavour, not at all overpowering.
Don't forget to use the carcase for stock. You can then add seasonal veg to make soup.
I'll add this to our existing thread on whole chciken in a slow cooker.

Thanks for the shift PP, sorry to have clogged up the system
I've just tried to life the chicken out of the pot and it's fallen to bits, but in a good way!! It smells divine. Am wishing the potatoes hurry up before I pick the bones bare and nobody gets anything.
Anyone know a spell to quicken the boiling of potatoes?Grocery Challenge M: £450/£425.08 A: £400/£.May -£400/£361 June £380/£230 (pages 18 & 27 explain)0 -
I bought a slow cooker a few weeks ago and am completley converted. I read somewhere you can 'roast' a joint in there.
I want to make a chicken dinner and use my slow cooker, do I just stick my chicken in and leave in on low for 6-8hrs?
I read somewhere to screw up foil balls and place the chicken onto them? Do I need to add anything?
Thanks0 -
I brown mine first to stop it looking insipid.0
