I put about an inch of water in the bottom and start it breast side down, then after a couple of hours turn it the right way up.

I don't bother browning mine as we never eat the skin so it's removed before serving anyway.

I bought a slow cooker a few weeks ago and am completley converted. I read somewhere you can 'roast' a joint in there.

Hi there  You can cook a whole chicken in a slow cooker, but can't roast one - that needs hot, dry cooking. Hang on and I'll get the link...... Whole chicken in the slowcooker.

    Thanks for the replies.

I have put my garlic chicken in after browning it first, i put it on tin foil balls, but wish i had used carrots now after reading it in the thread.

Hope its a success. Thanks again
  • I don't brown my chicken, but I do sprinkle it with some soy sauce, that helps to give it the nice colour.

I just whack mine in, no water, no foil etc. If I'm feeling adventurous I'll put a couple of lemon halves inside it and some garlic or something, but that's about it.

we don't eat the skin, so never brown it either. It comes out falling off the bone, with some lovely stock thats great for making gravy with. I would never roast a chicken again after discovering the slow cooker way, it's so much nicer.

  • I've put a 1.5kg chicken in the slow cooker, with about an inch of water in the bottom and some cloves of garlic, set on medium.

How long should it take to cook? I've never done one before:confused:

    Thank you

Also was the water a mistake?

    Hi

My slow cooker book says to always cook chicken on high with water for about 4 hours.
