    Hi all,

Just a quick question about the slow cooker. I'd like to cook the chicken for today in the slow cooker but it's now nearly 11 and we'll want to eat at about 5-6ish. Can I cook a chicken in 6hrs in a slow cooker?

I think I just put it on three or four balls of foil and was gonna stuff the cavity with an onion - is that right?

    Thanks,

    Kevin

  • Can anyone tell me how long it should take me to do a whole chicken in the slow cooker please? I would say it's medium sized.
I want it to be ready for tea today, and have just put it in now on high. Would it be ready for 5 o'clock if I turned it down to low, or do I need to have it on high for a bit first?

    Thanks

I cook every thing on slow- whole point of `slow cook`

I would put it in on low if i was going to leave it in all day, but by putting it on `high` it would be ready for lunch.

I always put whole chickens in my slow cooker. I usually put it in when I leave the house at 7am on low, and when I get in about 2pm or so i turn it off. About half and hour before we are due to eat, I put it in the oven to brown up because it is quite 'soggy' in when done in the sc. It falls off the bone when cooked slow.

What do you put your whole chickens in the SC with? Anything? or Nothing?

Haven't tried this yet (only done a joint of lamb & beef with veggies and a little stock in bottom) but fancy it for Saturday.

you can finish it off in the conventional oven to crisp up the skin, might improve the aroma?
but it's difficult to move the chicken as it's all slippy and can't get a grip as meat falls off the bone so easily.

It's much better tasting if you remove the skin prior to cooking!

Hi, I am trying to find instructions for cooking my whole chicken in the slow cooker. I want to give it a lemon/garlic taste. I'm not sure if I need to add any other liquid to it either.

    Any suggestions?

    Hi Dave,

If I cook a whole chicken in the slow cooker I don't add any liquid other than a tin of chopped tomatoes, some onions, yellow and green peppers and garlic. Cook for around six hours then lift the chicken out and put it in a hot oven for approx 15 minutes to brown the skin. Add any herbs towards the end of cooking rather than at the beginning as their flavour is lost if cooked for too long, which I think may be why so many people complain that slow cooked food is tasteless.

If you want a lemon and garlic flavour, just put two halves of the lemon into the body cavity and take a sharp knife and stud the flesh with slivers of garlic. Add enough liquid to cover the bottom of the crock pot if you want to but normally the juices released from the chicken will be enough.

There's an earlier thread with lots more advice on cooking a whole chicken in the slow cooker so I've added your thread to it to keep the suggestions together.
