Sorry to reply to an old thread but I tried to roast a chicken in my slow cooker at the weekend and it exploded (the cooker, not the chicken!). The bottom fell out of it.
I got this one for Christmas and have used it just twice and so am pretty miffed!
I will take it back but I just wondered if this would happen again if I did the same thing?
I put some onions and garlic in the bottom of the dish. Due to the shape of the cooker (has a narrower bottom than the top so there is a 'shelf' half way down) the chicken was not touching the bottom of the dish but resting on the shelf. I did not add any liquid. I had read various conflicting advice about roasting in a slow cooker and some say you must add water and some say it's not needed. The manual to the cooker has this question in it;
Can I roast without adding liquid?.
Yes - as long as you can cook it on LOW.
I cooked it on LOW and it exploded probably 2 hours later.
Do you think its just a faulty cooker or did I make it explode?0 -

I have been visiting these forums for ages but have never really posted much. I am trying my best to save money and be more OS at the same time so its time to try out a few of these ideas!:o
Sooooo I have done my big shop today and I have a 1.3 kg chicken sat in my fridge that I want to s t r e t c h as far as I can. I am feeding myself my OH and my little girl who is three.
I have a slow cooker but I have only really used it for casseroles in the past. My plan so far is to cook the chicken in the slow cooker (brave for me cos I like to cremate my chicken I'm scared of undercooking it lol) then have a chicken dinner tomorrow, and then hopefully squeeze the following out of the rest, Chicken fried rice, chicken & vegetable curry and chixken soup made with the stock. Is this feasible? And can anyone give me any pointers with the slow cooker chicken? Could I put it on tonight and leave it cooking while I sleep? Then strip the chicken down tomorrow morning so it goes in the fridge before I work in the afternoon. I don't get home til 6 so I like to get as much ready as I can in the morning.
Phew that was a mammoth first post for the OS board, apologies if it's in the wrong place I'm still getting the hang of it!

I think that sounds reasonable in terms of what you want to get out of it. I got three dinners and three lunches out of a smaller chicken last weekend. It's best to bulk dinners out with veg as it's cheaper. I can't help with the chicken in the slow cooker, but you can leave it overnight. I do this alot as I work five days a week and spend about 3 1/2 hours a day commuting. xI have had many Light Bulb Moments. The trouble is someone keeps turning the bulb off

Your plan sounds good to me and yes you can leave the slow cooker on overnight. I love poached chicken and this is basically what you are doing are you cooking the chicken in stock, water or just on it's own? I usually poach mine in water and add some veggies and herbs this way you have made a nice stock too that can be used as a base for stews, casseroles etc.

Thanks Taadaa, I wasn't sure for some reason even though I leave it on in the day! Wow thats a long commute, I bet your slow cooker comes in handy!
Thanks Butterfly Brain, I was hoping I wasn't being over optimistic! I wasn't sure which way to do it with or without water, I have read about the different methods on here but I can't find it now I want it lol! I think with water would be best though because like you say that way I get stock (and then when I do the bones for stock I get another lot ;-) )

I have a 3 year old and a 4 year old (and a H!) so your plan is doable
We have rubber chicken once a fortnight and I now manage:
Roast
followed by chicken and sweetcorn (or leek or lardon) pie save a quarter of this and add fried onion and milk next day to make chicken pasta.
All scrappy bits and bits of meat from boiling bones use for fried rice with peas and sweetcorn - do double rice and you get another meal out of it.
Stock use as a base for soups.
I've found the trick is to not let H have seconds on roast day or pie day
