    Hello

    I usually put 2 or 3 batons of celery to sit the chicken on and then put an inch of water or stock in the bottom just so the pot doesn't crack.

    Good luck - its really odd waking up to the smell of cooking chicken!

    I don't put any.

    Chop an onion and a carrot or two and put them on the bottom of the slow cooker. Then sit your chicken on the top. Season with pepper and salt. You CAN, if you wish, halve an orange or a lemon and put inside the cavity, plus whichever herbs you like. Put the lid on and switch it on!

    This method will even produce its own delicious gravy (you'll have to skim off the fat and the veg, of course).

    I usually put this on in the morning so it's ready for supper when we return. It's not like "roast" chicken, in that the skin isn't crispy, but it is yummy.
  • I bung in some carrots on the bottom and a bit of chopped onion and about three table spoons of water and thats it .Most chooks make quite a lot of liquid when they're cooking in a SC.After its cooked I just pour whats left into a pyrex jug and let it cool and set .then I take the set fat off and use it with roasting spuds and the jelly (stock) thats left I freeze until I have enough to use to make veggie soup in the SC .I get every scrap of the goodness from the chicken and its only the bones that are left which get discarded.

  • I'm going to try this tomorrow. I've bought a 'medium' chicken, how long should it take to cook and at what temperature? My slow cooker only has High, Low or Keep Warm settings.

    I have no idea how much my chicken weighed :o but it only just fit inside my slow cooker which has a 3.5 ltr capacity.
    I usually cook it on low (mine has the same settings as yours) for 8 hours - shouldnt matter if its a bit longer but this seems to work for me. I have even left one in overnight and it survived :rotfl:

    :rotfl::rotfl:OMG I have just realised that i put mine in (on low) at 7pm and it won't get switched off until at least 9am tomorrow so thats 14 hours.....

    Lets hope its ok :rotfl::rotfl:

    ps - It went in with an inch of stock and a large glass of 'not good enough to drink' wine :D
  • I'm a bit dubious about it but will give it a go! I've read on other recipe threads that the chicken looks a bit odd when it's done and the skin stays pale and goes all saggy, sounds appetising!
